Clopay Classic Wood doors are made from real wood and built by hand in the United States. You can pick raised panels (Model 44), recessed panels (Model 20/10) or flush panels (Model 33). Stain-grade species include redwood, cedar and hemlock, and there is also a paint-grade Extira composite.
These doors suit owners of older homes, craftsman houses and anyone who wants the warmth only true wood gives, and who is fine with the care that comes with it. Is Classic Wood Right for Your Home?
- You own an older home, a craftsman or a historic house where a steel door would look out of place.
- You want real grain and texture that you can stain to match your front door or porch.
- Your garage is detached or unheated, so insulation is less of a concern. Only Model 33 is insulated, at R-5.9.
- You’re willing to keep up with the finish. Real wood needs regular care to handle Ohio’s wet springs and freeze-thaw winters.
- If you want a wood look with little upkeep or much more insulation for an attached garage, the Clopay Canyon Ridge collections use wood-look composite over insulated steel instead.
Design Options
First pick the model. Model 44 has raised panels in short or long, Model 20/10 has recessed panels, and Model 33 is a flat flush design in smooth Luan or roughsawn Okoume. Then choose your wood and finish: nine stains, white paint, primed only or a ColorBlast shade. Top sections can be solid or take windows such as Stockton, Cathedral or Horizon styles.

More than steel. Wood needs its paint or stain kept up so moisture can’t get in, and Northeast Ohio’s snow, rain and freeze-thaw cycles are hard on finishes. Clopay publishes a care and maintenance guide for its wood doors that explains what to check and when.
Only Model 33 is. It has polystyrene between two wood boards, with an R-value of 5.9. Models 44 and 20/10 are single-layer and not insulated. If your garage is attached and heated, we may point you toward an insulated steel or composite door instead.
Model 44 comes in redwood, cedar or hemlock for staining, or Extira if you plan to paint. Models 20 and 33 use Luan or Okoume panels. We bring samples so you can compare grain and color against your siding and trim.
