Berea likes to call itself the “Grindstone Capital of the World,” and its welcome signs carry a grindstone to prove it. The city is home to Baldwin Wallace University and the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds, and the Rocky River's east branch flows right through town. The 2020 census counted 18,545 residents and 8,174 housing units.

In 1836, Methodist preachers and educator John Baldwin set out to build an ideal Christian community. They couldn't agree on a name, so they flipped a coin between Tabor and Berea, and Berea won. Baldwin started making grindstones from sandstone in the Rocky River creek bed in 1838. That was the start of Berea's quarries. By the 1840s the grindstones were being sold by way of the Erie Canal in New York, and Berea stone went into many important buildings.
The quarries grew so big that they swallowed the town's original main street and even the first Baldwin University campus, which moved north. The quarries closed in the late 1930s, when builders turned to concrete. Several old quarry pits filled with water and are now lakes, including Baldwin, Wallace and Coe Lakes.
Baldwin kept building schools. In 1845 he persuaded the Methodist Church to charter the Baldwin Institute, which was open to all regardless of sex, race, creed or ability to pay. It became Baldwin University in 1855 and merged with German Wallace College in 1913. Its conservatory is home to the oldest collegiate Bach Festival in the nation.
Berea's population doubled between 1940 and 1950, from 6,025 to 12,051, and reached 22,396 by 1970. So the city has two layers of housing: the older blocks by downtown and the college, and the postwar streets built around them. Today 70.6% of occupied homes are owner-occupied, and 29.4% are rented.
Berea sits on the Berea Sandstone, a rock layer named after the city that runs across Ohio, western Pennsylvania and northern Kentucky. The city's elevation is about 787 feet, and it gets plenty of snow and cold.

South and southwest of Brook Park, Berea has Middleburg Heights on its east side and Olmsted Falls with Olmsted Township to the west. Bagley Road, the city's largest street, is named for Abijah Bagley, an early farmer. Cleveland Metroparks' Rocky River and Mill Stream Run reservations pass through the city. Berea's school district also teaches children from Brook Park and Middleburg Heights. Berea-Midpark High School opened in Berea in 2020, and Grindstone Elementary is here too. Historic sites include the Berea Union Depot and the Baldwin-Wallace College North and South Campus historic districts.
