Can a garage door opener be hacked?
Openers made since the late 1990s use rolling codes that change every time you press the button, which makes copying the signal very hard. Older openers with code switches are easier to copy. A smart opener is as safe as your Wi-Fi and app password, so use a strong one.
Do I need Wi-Fi in the garage?
Yes. A smart opener connects to your home Wi-Fi, so the signal has to reach the garage. If the signal is weak out there, a Wi-Fi extender usually fixes it. We check the connection when we set up the app.
Can I add smart control to my current opener?
Often, yes. Many existing openers can be connected to your phone with a smart hub, if they are compatible. We check your opener first and tell you if a hub will work or if a new opener is the better choice.
Do smart openers have a camera?
Select LiftMaster and Chamberlain models have a camera built into the opener, so you can see your garage in the myQ app. Not every model has one, so tell us if a camera is important to you and we show you the options.
Does it work if the power goes out?
Many models have a battery backup that keeps the door working for a while during an outage. If your opener has no battery backup, you can still open the door by hand with the emergency release.
