What We Do in Erie County
Erie County is on the northern edge of Ohio, facing Lake Erie. Sandusky is the county seat and largest city, the 2020 census counted 75,622 people, and the county forms the Sandusky metropolitan area within the larger Cleveland-Akron-Canton region.
Lakefront homes, older neighborhoods in Sandusky and Huron, and farm country inland all have garage doors that need looking after. Wildcat Country and the Firelands
The Erie people gave the county its name, and in their language the word meant "wildcat." Erie was carved out in 1838, taking the top third of Huron County plus a piece of Sandusky County, and its borders were adjusted a few times soon after. Nearly all of present-day Erie and Huron counties lay in the Firelands, the western end of the Connecticut Western Reserve, which the Connecticut legislature set aside in 1792 as restitution for residents of Connecticut towns whose homes British forces destroyed in 1779 and 1781. Most of the settling here did not happen until after the War of 1812.
Long before that, Sandusky Bay, where the Sandusky River empties, appeared as Lac Sandouské on a 1718 French map, a name taken from the Wyandot, and in 1745 a Wyandot chief let the English open a trading post on its north shore, Fort Sandusky, the first fort Europeans built in the Ohio Country. The Erie County courthouse at 323 Columbus Avenue in Sandusky was built in 1872 in an ornate Second Empire style, and most of its front was remodeled in Art Deco starting in 1936 as a WPA project.
Lake, Bay, Islands and Rivers
Water makes up 60% of Erie County's area, and by land it is the second-smallest county in Ohio after Lake County. The opposite shore of the lake belongs to two counties in Ontario. The Huron and Vermilion rivers drain the county; the Huron forms near Milan where its east and west branches meet and reaches Lake Erie at the city of Huron, and several ancient earthwork mounds stand near it. The land is generally level with rich alluvial soil, and Sandusky has large limestone quarries. Offshore, the village of Kelleys Island covers the largest American island in Lake Erie, a limestone and dolomite ridge shaped by glaciers. The village had 256 residents in 2020 and is mainly a seasonal vacation spot reached by ferries from the mainland; the whole island is a historic district on the National Register, and it was renamed in 1840 by brothers Datus and Irad Kelley.
Lake wind, spray and road salt make rust the enemy here. Springs, cable drums and hinges corrode faster near the shore, and bottom seals crack in the cold. We use corrosion-resistant parts where we can and check the whole door during every tune-up.
Highways, Bridges and the Largest Towns
Highways
The Ohio Turnpike carries Interstates 80 and 90 across the county. U.S. Route 6 follows the lake, U.S. Route 250, a cross-state corridor from Sandusky on Lake Erie to Bridgeport on the Ohio River, runs south to Norwalk and on toward Wooster, and state routes 2, 4, 13, 60, 61, 99, 101, 113 and 269 fill in the map. The Thomas A. Edison Memorial Bridge crosses Sandusky Bay to connect highways in Erie and Ottawa counties.

Sandusky counted 25,095 residents in 2020, Perkins Township 12,390, Vermilion 10,659 and Huron 6,922, followed by Milan with 1,371 and Berlin Heights with 651.
