In northern Summit County, the small village of Northfield is home to 3,541 people (2020) spread across 1,553 households. More than a third of those households (35.2%) are one person living alone; the median resident is 43.8 years old.

Northfield has had its own post office since 1837. Some say the name was carried over from Northfield, Massachusetts; others think it was chosen because the town site lies in the northern part of Summit County. The village grew out of the northern part of the old Northfield Center Township, which also gave up much of its land to Macedonia.
Its population has taken some odd turns: 861 people in 1920, 1,750 in 1930, down to 575 in 1940, then 780 in 1950 and 1,055 in 1960 before jumping to 4,283 by 1970. That 1960s boom set much of the village's shape. The 2020 count found 1,629 housing units, and a house from that decade has a garage door that has seen more than half a century of Ohio weather, and it may still hang on its original track and brackets.
The village lies roughly 1,043 feet up, in the county's northern reaches, and winters bring plenty of snow. Snow, slush and road salt get tracked into garages all winter.
Briny slush corrodes a steel door's lowest panel and the cable brackets bolted to it. Rinse the bottom panel now and then, and let us take a look during a seasonal tune-up. Northfield belongs to the Nordonia Hills City School District, whose name blends Northfield, Macedonia and Sagamore Hills. Across six buildings it runs Northfield Elementary, Rushwood, Ledgeview and Lee Eaton Elementary, Nordonia Middle School and Nordonia High School, home of the Knights. Books come from the village's own branch of the county library system.
Summit Metro Parks' Bike & Hike Trail, one of the first rails-to-trails conversions, has a trailhead in neighboring Northfield Center. It follows the old Akron, Bedford & Cleveland Railroad, built in 1895. Northfield mail uses ZIP codes 44056 and 44067, which it shares with Macedonia and Sagamore Hills Township.
