Struthers is a city in eastern Mahoning County on the Mahoning River, directly southeast of Youngstown, with 10,063 residents at the 2020 census. Most of the city lies on the south side of the river, and State Routes 616 and 289 meet here. Its 4,336 households occupy 4,766 housing units; the homeowner vacancy rate was 1.7% and the median age 41.6.

John Struthers of Washington County, Pennsylvania, bought 400 acres of Poland Township land in 1798 and called it Marbletown. Its early history centers on Yellow Creek, where Daniel Eaton built the Hopewell Furnace in 1803, the cradle of the valley's iron industry, later named in the first line of Bruce Springsteen's 1995 song "Youngstown". The furnace ran for a little over ten years, until John Struthers's money troubles in 1812, and the land then sat idle until his son Thomas Struthers bought it in 1865 and brought industry and railroads.
Iron came back in 1869 with the Anna Furnace, a sheet mill followed in 1880 and a gear works in 1888, yet a century after John Struthers built his first cabin, sawmill and grist mill on Yellow Creek the village still had fewer than 1,000 people. An interurban electric line linked it with Youngstown in 1899. Then immigrants from all over Europe arrived for the steel jobs: Struthers incorporated as a village in 1902, became a city in 1920 and grew from 3,370 people in 1910 to 11,249 in 1930 and 15,631 in 1960.
The houses from those boom years sit close together on hillside lots, often with small detached garages off an alley or at the top of a steep drive. Single doors with extension springs, worn tracks and openers added decades later are what we fix most, and a sloped slab takes a carefully fitted bottom seal.
Cold air pools in the Mahoning River valley on winter nights, and ice on a steep driveway makes a stuck garage door more than an inconvenience. Frozen seals, stiff springs and slow openers all show up at once on the first hard freeze.
Free a frozen door by hand before using the opener, and call if it feels heavy. A fall tune-up checks spring balance, cables and the safety reverse before winter.
Struthers' neighborhoods include Downtown, Nebo, North Hill, Lyon Plat and Coke Alley. Nebo, on the east end south of the river, takes its name from the Mount Nebo coal mine opened around 1828 by Elijah Stevenson, although a popular folk story ties it to the Slavic word for heaven or sky, and the neighborhood long had a large Slavic American population. It sits between the gorges of Yellow Creek on the west and Panther Creek, also called Hines Run, on the east, with the Norfolk Southern line to the north, and its south end is much higher than its north end. A "Neba Station" was recorded on the rail line by 1874, an elementary school opened on Center Street by 1917, and Struthers annexed Nebo's southern half in 1932. Immigrant workers founded a number of ethnic clubs there.
Struthers City Schools consist of an elementary, a middle school and Struthers High, where the Wildcats play in the Northeast 8 Athletic Conference and won a girls basketball state title in 1978. The high school is home to radio station WKTL 90.7 FM, and the city has a branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County. Football coach and scout Steve Belichick, abstract painter Paul Jenkins, baseball player Andy Kosco and Montrose singer Bob James all hail from Struthers.
