Glenwillow was carved out of Solon Township and founded in 1893 as a company town for an explosives maker. As the towns around it filled with houses, the company could no longer test its products here, and the plant closed in 1972. In the 1980s the village put in new utilities and a 250-acre industrial park.
In the early 2000s, the old company houses and general store were renovated, and a new town center, village park and new homes were laid out in a town-plan design. The population nearly doubled between 2000 and 2010, to 923. That year 43.7% of the village's 316 households had children, so a good share of garages belong to young families.
Glenwillow sits about 942 feet above sea level, and Tinker's Creek flows through the village on its way to the Cuyahoga River. Snow, cold and damp air all take a toll on springs, cables and seals.
A newer door isn't maintenance-free. In the first few years, rollers and hinges loosen and springs settle, so the door starts to rattle or drift. An adjustment and lube fixes that before it turns into a broken part.
