Copley Township covers the western side of Summit County, next to Bath on the north, Fairlawn on the northeast, Akron on the east and Norton on the south, and Sharon Township of Medina County to the west. The township was first called Greenfield, after Gardiner Green, who owned a large part of it. Green was the son-in-law of the painter John Singleton Copley, and he later changed the name to Copley, his wife's maiden name. It is the only Copley Township in Ohio. Over the years parts of the original township became part of Akron or Fairlawn, and Akron later set up a joint economic development arrangement with the township.
Copley has two named communities of its own. Pigeon Creek, a census-designated place in the northwest, had 886 residents in 2020; in 2000, 82.6% of its households were married couples and 43.5% had children at home. Montrose, an unincorporated community, lies on the northern boundary with Bath Township; together with Ghent it makes up the Montrose-Ghent census-designated place, which counted 5,254 residents in 2020 and had 1,987 housing units back in 2000. Pigeon Creek is also the name of a stream here, fed by Schocalog Run and flowing into Wolf Creek, which feeds the Tuscarawas River. Low ground near the creeks stays damp, and at around 1,004 feet above sea level, winter wind stacks snow in drifts across driveways.

The township's high school, Copley High, serves the whole Copley-Fairlawn City School District. Where Route 18 crosses Interstate 77, Copley and Bath split a full cloverleaf interchange. The township's mail uses ZIP code 44321.
