Read the job ›Columbia Township is the easternmost of Lorain County's eighteen townships, and most residents simply call it Columbia Station, the name of its post office. The 2020 census counted 7,411 people here. There are no villages or cities inside the township.

Columbia was part of the Connecticut Western Reserve, and in 2007 the township celebrated its bicentennial at the annual Homecoming. Its first post office opened around 1817, kept by postmaster Thomas G. Bronson in his own house. It was given the Native American name for the Rocky River, Copokah, but the papers from Washington spelled it Copopo, and the mistake stuck. The Copopa School, built in 1921, still carries a form of that name.
Farming was always the main work here, and in the second half of the 19th century sandstone from local quarries was shipped far and wide. Two of the old quarries, Jaquay and Wildwood Lake, later became swimming parks, and Wildwood stayed open until 2001. The township largely escaped the sprawl that reached its neighbors, although the number of farms has dropped sharply.
The west branch of the Rocky River and Plum Creek both flow north through the township, and where the land is open, wind has room to build. Wide doors on detached garages and barns take a beating, and damp ground near the creeks keeps floors wet and rusts bottom brackets and cables.
A door that closes crooked or leaves daylight along one edge is telling you something has shifted. We re-hang cables, replace worn rollers and fit new bottom seals, and a yearly tune-up keeps a big, heavy door balanced.
Lorain County Metro Parks opened the Columbia Reservation in 2003: 409 acres, 285 of them high-quality wetlands in the floodplain of the Rocky River's west branch, with trails through ponds, marshes, wet meadows and swamps. It is popular with bird watchers, with more than 50 species seen there, including the great blue heron. Columbia Township Park has ten ballfields, tennis and basketball courts, a playground and a walking path on 27.1 acres, and the local VFW's veterans memorial there was dedicated on Memorial Day 2007 before a crowd of more than 1,000.
The Columbia Town Hall and the Columbia Baptist Church are on the National Register of Historic Places, and Columbia Station has a branch of the Lorain Public Library. The township borders Olmsted Falls, Strongsville, North Ridgeville and Eaton Township.
