Milan is a village of 1,371 people (2020) that reaches into both Erie and Huron counties; its Erie County part belongs to the Sandusky metropolitan area and its Huron County part to the Norwalk micropolitan area. The village occupies the southern part of Milan Township, a township of 3,580. The 2010 count found 509 households living in 551 homes; 57.6% were married couples, and the median resident was 44.5 years old.
Canal-era houses and newer homes alike depend on their garage doors. When yours fails, ring Proactive for same-day service on most calls, often within 1 hour at your Milan address.

A carriage-house style door from Clopay, Amarr or Wayne Dalton suits a canal-era house (door installation); a LiftMaster or Chamberlain opener rounds it out (opener installation).

In the canal years, local brokerages and trading houses swapped farmers' crops for currency, hardware and goods shipped across Lake Erie from the East, and Milan was a retail center from the 1830s to the early 1850s. Today the shops around the square, farm buildings and storage barns still depend on overhead doors, and our crews cover commercial door repair and operator service for them.
Ebenezer Merry platted the village in 1817 on the site of Petquotting, an abandoned Moravian mission village, dammed the Huron River below it and built a gristmill and sawmill known as Merrys Mills. First called Beatty, the village incorporated as Milan in 1833, named after Milan, Italy. Work on the Milan Canal began that same year, and it opened to lake navigation on July 4, 1839. For 15 years or more Milan was one of the busiest ports on the Great Lakes, with 1847 its peak year; the canal was deep enough for Lake Erie schooners, and about 60 ships were built here between 1840 and 1867, many from local white oak.
Thomas Alva Edison was born in Milan on February 11, 1847, in a small hillside brick home that is now open to the public as a museum, and he lived here until he was 7. The Huron River flows just north of the village square. Milan stayed under a thousand people for nearly a century, 771 in 1860, 627 in 1890 and 846 in 1950, then rose to 1,862 by 1970, so its streets hold both 19th-century houses and postwar homes with attached garages.

Damp air rises off the Huron River below the square, and cold lake wind reaches the village in winter. Springs weaken in the cold, and a wet seal sticks fast to the slab by morning.
A yearly checkup tunes spring tension and oils every roller.
Milan shares its school system with Berlin Heights: the Edison Local Schools run Edison Elementary, Edison Middle and Edison High, and the Chargers carry the inventor's name onto the field. The unincorporated community of Avery, once called Spears Corners and formerly the center of township life, is in the west of Milan Township. Milan's sister city is Yawata, Kyoto, in Japan.
