What We Do in Cleveland Heights

Up on the Portage Escarpment, the high ground east of Cleveland, lies Cleveland Heights. It was founded in 1901 and is one of Cleveland's historic streetcar suburbs. At the 2020 census, 45,312 people lived here, in 20,053 households, and the city had 22,270 housing units.

We keep those homes' garage doors moving. Heights calls run from a spring that popped overnight to a new door chosen to suit a 1920s facade.

Repairs for Heights Garages

  • Springs on older doors. Older single doors often ride on side-mounted stretch springs; we swap the pair and add containment cables, and newer torsion setups get springs matched to the door. Background: spring service.
  • Frayed cables and rusted brackets after Snow Belt winters. Background: cables.
  • Doors off track in narrow, older garages. Background: off-track doors.
  • Tired rollers and hinges on heavy wood doors. Background: rollers.
  • Openers and safety eyes, whether Genie, Craftsman, Chamberlain or LiftMaster. Background: openers.

New Doors for Historic Heights Homes

Heights houses come in many styles, and the garage door should suit the house. On a Tudor Revival or Colonial Revival house, a steel door with a recessed or arched-window design suits the architecture. Where the garage is attached, pick an insulated model. Heights installs are mostly Clopay, Wayne Dalton and Amarr, each sized after we measure (see the installation page).

Still hauling the door up by hand? With an outlet in the garage, a Chamberlain, LiftMaster or Genie opener and keypad fix that for good (see opener choices).

Doors for Heights Business Districts

Cleveland Heights has busy commercial streets, including Coventry Village on Coventry Road between Mayfield Road and Euclid Heights Boulevard, and the Taylor Road business district announced in 1926. Shops and mixed-use buildings in areas like these use sectional overhead doors. We service those doors and motors too; see storefront and commercial doors.

From Bluestone Quarries to a Streetcar Suburb

Until the late 1800s this was mostly timber and farmland, with a few orchards, quarries and vineyards. Mayfield Road, the first road through the city, wasn't built until 1828. Duncan McFarland opened one of the early quarries here and mined bluestone, and the settlement that grew up around it for the workers was called Bluestone. A road with that name is still there.

Electric streetcars changed everything in the 1890s. About 1890 a town center began forming at Mayfield and Superior Roads. Cleveland Heights organized as a hamlet of about 1,500 people in 1901, became a village in 1903 and a city on August 9, 1921. The population went from 15,236 in 1920 to 50,945 in 1930, more than tripling in a decade, and reached 61,813 by 1960.

So a large share of Heights houses went up in the 1910s and 1920s, and in those neighborhoods the garage was usually an outbuilding behind the house. If your garage is one of those, it may be a detached building at the end of a long driveway, with a narrow opening, low headroom and an older door. Those garages need doors and springs sized to what's really there.

Where the Snow Belt Begins

Cleveland Heights sits at about 942 feet, well above the lake. As the land climbs from Cleveland into the Heights, you enter the Snow Belt, where seasons near 100 inches of snow are not unusual. That's a heavy load for any garage door and opener.

Snow drifts against the door and freezes the bottom seal to the driveway. Springs, already weak in the cold, break when the opener strains against a stuck door. Salt then works on cables and brackets. The city spans three watersheds, and about half of it drains to Dugway Brook, so spring thaw brings plenty of water down driveways toward garage doors. A good bottom seal matters here.

Finding Your Way Around the Heights

Mayfield Road, U.S. Route 322, crosses the city east to west. Cedar Road, Coventry Road, Lee Road and Taylor Road are other main streets. Cleveland Heights mail uses ZIP codes 44106, 44112, 44118 and 44121. Most of the city is in the Cleveland Heights-University Heights school district, with six elementary schools in the city, two middle schools and Cleveland Heights High School. A small part of the northwest side is in the East Cleveland district.

The city has seven parks: Barbara H. Boyd, Cain, Cumberland, Denison, Forest Hill, Kenilworth and Turtle. Around the Heights we also serve University Heights, Shaker Heights, South Euclid, East Cleveland and Cleveland.

Cleveland Heights, Area by Area

Euclid Golf and Fairmount Boulevard

The Euclid Golf Allotment covers 142 acres roughly bounded by Cedar Road, Coventry Road, West St. James Parkway and Ardleigh Drive. Its homes were built between 1913 and 1929 on land once owned by John D. Rockefeller and leased to the Euclid Golf Club. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002, and it includes the western half of the Fairmount Boulevard District. Its deed restrictions even set rules for where garages could go. Today the district has 229 homes and 133 outbuildings, most of them garages. About 75 homes are Tudor Revival. If you live here, your garage is probably a detached building behind the house, and the owners care how the door looks from the street.

Euclid Heights and Coventry

In 1890, Patrick Calhoun bought 300 acres on Cedar Hill, and in 1893 he laid out the planned community of Euclid Heights, with no stores allowed. After his company failed in the 1910s, some unbuilt lots near Coventry Road became apartment buildings. The Euclid Heights and Mayfield streetcar lines met at Coventry and Mayfield after 1907, and Coventry Village grew into a business district. If your garage sits behind an apartment building and serves several tenants, expect its springs and opener to wear out faster.

Stadium Square and Taylor Road

In November 1926, a new business district was announced on Taylor Road. Homes and mixed-use buildings in the Tudor Revival style went up around it, and the area is now the Stadium Square Historic District. If your Tudor has a small garage at the top of a sloped driveway, a well-balanced door matters even more, because a heavy door is hard to hold by hand.

Forest Hill and the north side

In 1873, John D. Rockefeller acquired about 700 acres in what is now East Cleveland and Cleveland Heights. Part of the land was later turned into homes, and in 1938 the family donated the land that is now Forest Hill Park. Homes near the park sit close to East Cleveland, and a small part of this side of the city is in the East Cleveland school district.

Cedar and Lee, Mayfield and Lee

The Heights Rockefeller Building stands at Mayfield and Lee Roads, and Cain Park, one of the city's seven parks, is nearby. When you call, give us the nearest main crossing, such as Cedar and Lee or Mayfield and Lee, and we'll find you fast.
