Vermilion is a Lake Erie town with a foot in two counties. The city sits in both Erie and Lorain counties, and it takes its name from the Vermilion River, which runs out to the lake here. 10,659 people lived in Vermilion at the 2020 census, and it still calls itself “Harbor Town 1837.”

Each kind of Vermilion house calls for a different door. On a captain's home in the Harbor Town district, a carriage-house design keeps the street's character. On a cottage that became a year-round home, the answer may be a door built for a short or odd-sized opening. Vermilion grew in layers. It was settled early in the 19th century, became a village in 1837 and grew up as a fishing and small-boat harbor. In 1847 Congress built the Vermilion Lighthouse to help ships find their way on Lake Erie. As trade grew in bigger cities nearby, the river proved too small for large commercial traffic, and recreational boating took over.
In the early 1900s the shore became a resort area, full of beaches and cottages. Most of those cottages were later made into year-round homes, and Linwood Park is a well-known example. In 1960 Vermilion merged with Vermilion-on-the-Lake and became a city. The population went from 2,214 in 1950 to 9,872 in 1970.
Each layer brings its own garage door work. A cottage turned into a full-time home may have a garage added later, sometimes narrow, sometimes short on headroom. A historic house needs a door that suits the street. And homes from the 1960s growth years are now old enough that their first springs and openers are long gone, or should be.
The lake is a big reason people love Vermilion, and it is also tough on steel. Damp air and wind off the water eat away at coils, lift cables, hinge pins and the brackets at the bottom corners, and garages nearest the harbor and the beach streets feel it most. Winter adds road salt and hard freezes.
So on Vermilion calls we look hard at corrosion. A rust-coated spring breaks sooner. A rusty cable can snap at the bottom bracket and drop one side of the door. We lubricate the moving parts, swap out corroded hardware and look over the rubber along the floor so rain and drifting snow stay outside.
Many homes here are still used as summer or vacation houses. A door that sits closed all winter deserves a quick check before it goes back to daily use in spring.
