Kent is the largest city in Portage County, set along the Cuyahoga River on the county's western edge, and it had 28,215 residents at the 2020 census. It is a college town, home to the main campus of Kent State University, and the median age here was just 23.2. The city counted 12,052 housing units and 10,696 households, and its owner-occupied rate of 42.7% is well below the county's.

Kent grew as a mill and manufacturing town along the river, and the Kent Industrial District near downtown is on the National Register. Today manufacturing employs 8.6% of the city's workforce, and Kent State runs a research park along State Route 59 that houses high-tech companies in the liquid crystal field. Buildings like these need commercial door repair and dependable commercial operators, and we service both.
John and Sally Haymaker settled on the banks of the Cuyahoga in November 1805, and a gristmill followed in 1807. Two small villages grew up around the river's water power: Franklin Mills, the Lower Village, and from 1818 an Upper Village briefly known as Carthage. Work on the Pennsylvania and Ohio Canal began in the mid-1830s; a lock and arch dam were finished in 1836 and the canal opened in 1840. Abolitionist John Brown lived in the village from 1835 to 1839, building a tannery with Zenas Kent, and Franklin Mills had three stops on the Underground Railroad.
In 1863 the Atlantic and Great Western Railroad arrived, thanks largely to Zenas's son Marvin Kent, and its maintenance shops opened in 1865. The village was renamed Kent in his honor and incorporated on May 6, 1867. The census counted 2,301 people in 1870, 8,581 in 1940, 12,418 in 1950 and 28,183 in 1970, the jump driven by the growth of Kent State and the suburbs.
That history leaves Kent with streets of 19th-century and early 20th-century houses, many with small detached garages, as well as postwar neighborhoods and student rentals. The West Main Street District alone includes 20 homes on the National Register. Older garages often have narrow openings, low headers and extension springs, and we fit replacement doors to what is there rather than what a catalog assumes.
Officially, Kent sits outside Lake Erie's snowbelt. It does fall within the secondary snowbelt, though, and certain wind directions bring heavier lake-effect snow. Winter storms can drop a foot or more, and the record low is 22 below zero, set on January 17, 1982. Thaws above 50 degrees in January and February are not unusual either.
Those swings from freezing to thawing loosen hardware and harden the bottom seal. A door that suddenly feels heavy or bangs shut is warning you that a spring or cable is weakening. Call before it fails, and book a yearly tune-up to catch the rest.
Around 1780 Captain Samuel Brady escaped capture by leaping 21 feet across the Cuyahoga; Brady's Leap is now a city park. Just downstream, the 1836 arch dam was bypassed in 2003 and the river rerouted through the old canal lock, and the little park built behind the dam, Heritage Park, was dedicated in May 2005. Kent runs nearly 20 parks and preserves, including the 56-acre Fred Fuller Park, and the Portage Hike and Bike Trail follows the river through town. The Cooperrider-Kent Bog on the city's southern edge has the southernmost and largest stand of tamarack trees in the continental United States.
Kent is known as the Tree City, a nickname that goes back to John Davey, who came here in 1881 as head groundskeeper at Standing Rock Cemetery and published The Tree Doctor in 1901. The black squirrels brought to campus from Canada in 1961 have become another local icon. The Haymaker Farmers' Market, started in 1992, sets up every Saturday morning from May to October under the Greer Bridge, and the Kent Heritage Festival draws about 25,000 people each July.
State Route 59 runs east-west along Main Street and Haymaker Parkway, State Route 43 runs north-south, and State Route 261 bypasses the city on the south and east. The Kent City School District runs four elementary schools, Stanton Middle School and Theodore Roosevelt High School, while the part of the city south of Route 261 belongs to the Field Local School District. The Kent Free Library dates to 1892.
