Lorain County Repair Calls
The most common call is a broken torsion spring, often rusted through first. After that come frayed cables, rollers with worn bearings, doors knocked off the track and openers whose sensors fog up in damp weather.

Lorain County sits between Cuyahoga County and Erie County on the Lake Erie shore. Elyria is the county seat, Lorain is the largest city, and the 2020 census counted 312,964 residents. The county belongs to the Cleveland metropolitan area and is home to Oberlin College.
Lakefront houses in Avon Lake and Sheffield Lake, newer subdivisions in Avon and North Ridgeville, older blocks in Elyria and Lorain, and farm lots around Wellington and LaGrange each bring their own garage door problems. We handle all of them: springs, cables, rollers, tracks and openers, and we install new doors too, with same-day service on most calls, often within 1 hour.

The most common call is a broken torsion spring, often rusted through first. After that come frayed cables, rollers with worn bearings, doors knocked off the track and openers whose sensors fog up in damp weather.

A door of galvanized steel with a quality finish, stainless or coated hardware and a fresh bottom seal holds up best in lake air. We install Clopay and Wayne Dalton doors and LiftMaster openers. See door installation.
Lorain County was physically set up in 1822 from pieces of several neighboring counties and became judicially independent in 1824. The name first proposed for it was "Colerain," after Coleraine in Northern Ireland. Heman Ely, who had founded and named Elyria, chose "Lorain" instead, based on Lorraine, the old German and now French province.
Oberlin College opened in 1833 as the Oberlin Collegiate Institute. It is the oldest coeducational liberal arts college in the United States, and in 1835 it became one of the first American colleges to admit African Americans; in 1837 it was the first to admit women, apart from a brief experiment at Franklin College that began in 1787. Its conservatory is the oldest continuously operating conservatory of music in the country.

By area Lorain is Ohio's fourth-largest county, and 47% of that area is water. The Black River forms in Elyria where its east and west branches meet. The East Branch starts in northwestern Medina County and flows north past Grafton; the West Branch rises in northern Ashland County and passes Rochester. From Elyria the river runs north past Sheffield to Lake Erie at Lorain, and by way of the lake, the Niagara River and Lake Ontario its water belongs to the St. Lawrence River basin. Farther west, the Vermilion River comes up from Ashland County past Wakeman and reaches the lake at Vermilion; it is commonly muddy after rains. The reddish clay along its banks gave it its name, and it is the westernmost Ohio river that the state stocks with steelhead trout every year.
Wind off the lake hits the shoreline towns hardest, and winter road salt is everywhere. Salt and wet air rust springs and cable drums, and a steel door's bottom section can corrode from the inside where water sits against it. A yearly tune-up keeps the hardware lubricated and catches worn parts early.
The Ohio Turnpike carries Interstates 80 and 90 across the county, and Interstate 480 starts here. U.S. Routes 6 and 20 and state routes such as 2, 10, 18, 57, 58, 83, 113 and 301 carry the rest of the traffic. Lorain County Regional Airport is south of Lorain's downtown.
The county has 20 public school districts, and the Lorain County Joint Vocational School serves 13 of them from a campus near State Route 58 and U.S. Route 20 in Oberlin. Midview High School is in Eaton Township near Grafton, Keystone High School is in LaGrange, Firelands High School is in Henrietta Township near Oberlin and Brookside High School is in Sheffield. Lorain County Community College is in Elyria.
Lorain counted 65,211 people in 2020, Elyria 52,656, North Ridgeville 35,280, Avon Lake 25,206, Avon 24,847 and Amherst 12,681.

Installed new door & opener. Great service from initial service appt to installation.
Excellent service and highly recommended! I called them initially for routine garage door maintenance, but during the inspection, they identified that the spring was broken. I had been experiencing issues in the past with the garage door not opening or closing properly, and they were able to identify the underlying problem quickly. They recommended replacing the spring with higher-quality rods and drums, and I’m very happy with the result. I could immediately feel the difference after the repair—the garage door feels much stronger, smoother, and more secure than before. The team was professional, knowledgeable, and took the time to explain what needed to be done and why. I really appreciate their honest recommendation and quality of work. Great experience from start to finish. I would definitely recommend them to anyone needing garage door repair or maintenance!

I had a great experience with Proactive Garage Door Repair for my new garage door installation. The team was professional, knowledgeable, and did an excellent job from start to finish. They arrived on time, explained everything clearly, and made sure the installation was done properly. The new garage door looks great and works perfectly. The pricing was fair, and the whole process was smooth and stress-free. I highly recommend Proactive Garage Door Repair to anyone looking for a quality garage door installation!
Proactive company replaced the conver kit, very good quality and, great job! Thanks
It can. Moisture and winter salt rust springs, cables and brackets faster near the shore. Regular lubrication and a hardware check each year help a lot, and on houses that face the lake we recommend coated hardware when parts are replaced.
