Two places share the name Hiram, and this page serves both: the village, with 996 people at the 2020 census, and the township surrounding it, with 2,396. The village was formed from part of the township in northern Portage County, and its post office dates to 1816. At the center is Hiram College, a small private liberal arts school.
Between college buildings, village houses and farm roads, garage doors here come in every size. We fix broken springs, loose cables, rollers and openers, and replace doors that are beyond repair. Expect same-day service on most calls, often within 1 hour in Hiram.

On November 7, 1849, members of the Disciples of Christ settled on Hiram for a new school because they thought the area was "healthful and free of distractions." The Western Reserve Eclectic Institute opened on November 27, 1850, and became Hiram College on February 20, 1867. James A. Garfield studied there from 1851 to 1853, came back as a teacher in 1856 and, as principal, expanded the curriculum before leaving in 1861. In 1880 he was elected the 20th president of the United States.
The college shapes the village's numbers. The 2010 census counted 1,406 people but only 248 housing units and 228 households, and the median age was 21. Away from campus, homes are mostly village houses and, out in the township, farm properties, where an outbuilding often has an overhead door of its own.

Hiram's weather records show why doors struggle here. The average January high is 32.5 degrees, January alone brings about 20 inches of snow on average, and the record low is 25 below zero. Precipitation runs about 44 inches a year.
Cold like that thickens grease, stiffens the bottom seal and breaks worn springs. A tune-up before winter keeps the door balanced and moving freely when the snow comes.
Hiram Township is named for Hiram I, the biblical king of Tyre, and it is the only township of that name in Ohio. Part of Garrettsville was formed from its southeast corner, and a hamlet called Hiram Rapids in the northwest had its own post office from 1840 to 1912. John and Elsa Johnson came from Vermont in 1818 to farm here, and from September 1831 to March 1832 their farm was home to Joseph Smith and the temporary headquarters of his church. The farm has been open to tours as a historic site since 1956, and the house was restored to its 1830s look in 2001.
The village is part of the Crestwood Local School District, along with Mantua. Olympic steeplechaser Bridget Franek grew up in the township.
