Mentor is the largest city in Lake County, stretched along the south shore of Lake Erie northeast of Cleveland, and it counted 47,450 residents at the 2020 census. Locals will tell you how to say it: most residents say MEN-ter, many say men-ner, and only outsiders tend to say men-tore, which is why the city's old slogan was "It's better in Mentor."
It is a city of settled households. The 2020 census found 20,251 households in 21,074 housing units, with only 3.9% of units vacant and a homeowner vacancy rate of 1.1%. Married couples made up 52.4% of households, and the median age stood at 48.0. Nearly every one of those homes has a garage door that opens and closes several times a day, and when one stops, we answer. Mentor Avenue, US Route 20, is the city's commercial corridor, and shops line most of its major roads. Manufacturing is a big part of the local economy too, from medical products, polymers and plastics to circuit boards and parts for the computer and automation industries, and both CSX and Norfolk Southern freight lines cross the city. Loading docks and service bays here need commercial door repair and well-tuned commercial operators, and we handle both.
Mentor takes its name from the Greek figure Mentor, in keeping with the Western Reserve settlers' habit of borrowing from Greek classicism, the same habit that named Solon, Macedonia and Euclid. Charles Parker built the first settlement in 1797, and the Mentor Headlands, in the northeast of today's city, were settled that same year by Connecticut Land Company surveyors. The community was formally established in 1855.
For decades it was a country place. Rosebushes grew so thickly that Mentor was nicknamed the Rose Capital of the Nation, and its tourist trade boomed as Clevelanders came out to escape the city's dirty, industrial air. In the early 1900s many wealthy Cleveland families kept large summer estates in Lake County. After World War II the automobile brought middle-class and working-class families, and the census shows how fast: 2,383 people in 1950, 4,354 in 1960, then 36,912 in 1970, 47,358 in 1990 and 50,278 in 2000.
That boom set the pattern for Mentor's garages. Houses went up by the thousands after 1950, and many still have their original tracks and door frames even if the door or opener has been swapped once or twice. Springs from those decades are well past their rated cycles. When we replace one, we size the new pair to the door's actual weight and check the cables and bottom brackets while the door is down.
Mentor is wetter than the Ohio average. It gets 42.87 inches of precipitation a year, above both the state and national averages, and 93.4 days with measurable rain against the state's 80. It also expects about 61.25 days a year with an inch or more of snow, and humidity averages 75.82%.
All that moisture works on garage door hardware. Hinges, rollers and springs rust faster, wood doors swell, and salt-laden slush from the car pools under the door and eats at the bottom section and the cable brackets. Keep the floor rinsed and the seal in one piece, and schedule a yearly tune-up: we lubricate everything that moves, balance the door and test the opener's safety reverse before winter.
In 1876 James A. Garfield bought a home in Mentor, and in 1880 he ran the first successful front porch campaign for the presidency from it. The house is now the James A. Garfield National Historic Site. The city's flag, designed in 1988, shows a cardinal, Ohio's state bird and Mentor's too, inside a white circle ringed by six stars for the six original townships surveyed in 1797.
Mentor is also home to Headlands Beach State Park, the longest public swimming beach in Ohio, and to Mentor Marsh, an abandoned channel of the Grand River that is now a state nature preserve. Mentor's public school district runs eight elementary schools, two middle schools and Mentor High School. Laketran buses serve the city, and Interstate 90, US Route 20 and State Route 2 all cross it. Former Ohio State coach Jim Tressel and endurance rower Katie Spotz both have Mentor ties.
Lake County's ridges are beaches left behind by glacial lakes as the glaciers receded, and some of its roads are laid along them.
The northeast corner of the city, settled by surveyors in 1797, runs out to Headlands Beach State Park and the Headlands Dunes. Homes this close to the water see the most rust, so we check every spring, cable and hinge.
Lake Shore Boulevard follows the Elkton beach, the northernmost of the old glacial ridges. Off it, the Mentor Lagoons Nature Preserve and Marina has trails with views of the marsh, the marina, the shoreline and rare dune plants. Lake Elementary, part of the Mentor schools, is in neighboring Mentor-on-the-Lake.
Morton Community Park sits next to the Mentor Marsh Nature Preserve, with walking trails, a pool and spray park, a skatepark and basketball courts.
Mentor Avenue carries US 20 across the city. Among the city parks, Civic Center Park has a water park and the Mentor Civic Arena, and the Commemorative Rose Garden was built in 1988 to mark Mentor's 25th year as a city. The Wildwood Cultural Center and Park, a manor built in 1908 for the Oliver family and bought by the city in 1980, sits on a 34-acre estate with hiking trails.
Interstate 90 and State Route 2 both cross Mentor. Eleanor B. Garfield Park, one of the largest in the city, has a recreation center, pool, fishing pond and wildlife area, and the runways of the Lake County Executive Airport extend into Mentor from Willoughby.
