Boardman Township, one of the fourteen townships of Mahoning County, is a suburb directly south of Youngstown and the second-largest municipality in the Youngstown-Warren metropolitan area. Its 40,213 residents at the 2020 census lived in 17,477 households. It is also the only Boardman Township in Ohio, and although it has no incorporated towns of its own, it is made up of many distinct neighborhoods.

Boardman is one of the Mahoning Valley's main retail hubs. Commercial property lines U.S. Route 224 for almost the township's whole length, except the part zoned for Mill Creek Park, and State Route 7 is the other main artery, with a hospital along it. Newer development runs along South Avenue beside the southern stretch of Interstate 680. The former headquarters campus of a steel company is now the center of a medical campus and a branch of Youngstown State University. Stores, clinics and service buildings along these roads depend on overhead and service doors, and our crews handle commercial door repair and operator service.
Elijah Boardman, a land agent of the Connecticut Land Company, founded the township in the late 1790s as township 1, range 2 of the Connecticut Western Reserve. It was formally established in 1806, although the township government uses 1805 on its seal, documents and signs. For the whole 19th century Boardman was farm country, with grain crops and apple orchards.
After a century of farming, the northern part of the township filled in from about 1950 as suburban spillover from Youngstown's South Side, and strip commercial development followed the main roads soon after. Older still is Newport Village, today a National Register historic district noted for its Tudor Revival and Colonial Revival houses. Around 1950 a large steel company also built a headquarters complex in Boardman; when the company closed in 1977, the campus was left for others to develop.
That history shows up in the garages. Newport Village and the older streets near Market Street have detached or tuck-under garages with narrow openings and extension springs, the postwar blocks have attached one- and two-car garages, and the newer subdivisions farther south have wide doors with heavy torsion springs. We carry parts for all three.
Boardman gets the same Mahoning Valley winters as the city next door: gray months of snow, sleet and freezing rain, with deep cold snaps in January. Every freeze and thaw works on a garage door. Springs lose tension, lubricant turns to paste, and a bottom seal soaked by slush can freeze to the driveway by morning.

Boardman borders Mill Creek Park, one of the most popular places in the Youngstown area. On the park grounds are an 11-acre rose garden, several small waterfalls, a lily pond with geese and turtles, marshland and Lanterman's Mill, where grain is still ground daily, plus a 36-hole golf course.
St. James Episcopal Church, the oldest structure in the township, was built in 1828 for a congregation founded about 1809, the first Episcopal church established outside the Thirteen Colonies. It was deconsecrated in 1971, moved to Boardman Park in 1972 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. The township's other National Register listings include the Forest Glen Estates Historic District, the Mill Creek Park Historic District and the Newport Village Historic District.
The Boardman Local School District serves most of the township with Boardman High School, Boardman Glenwood Junior High, Boardman Center Intermediate and three elementary schools, while outlying areas belong to the Canfield, Poland and Youngstown districts. St. Charles School is a Catholic K-8 school, and the township has a branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County. Quarterback Bernie Kosar, singer Maureen McGovern, actress Elizabeth Hartman and Sue Thomas, the first deaf FBI agent, are among Boardman's notable people.
A portion of the township was counted as the Boardman census-designated place until 2020. Boardman touches Youngstown to the north, Struthers to the northeast, Poland and Poland Township to the east, Springfield and Beaver townships to the south and southeast, Canfield Township to the west and Austintown at its northwest corner. Newport Village is one of Boardman's historic neighborhoods, listed on the National Register with its Tudor Revival and Colonial Revival houses. Homes of that style often have detached or tuck-under garages with narrow or custom-sized openings and heavy wood-look doors, so we measure carefully before ordering a replacement and pick springs to match the door's real weight.
The streets along the Youngstown line were built from around 1950 as the city's South Side spilled over. Expect postwar houses with attached single garages and original track.
The township's busiest commercial road runs east and west through the middle of Boardman, and Boardman Park, home of the old St. James meeting house at 375 Boardman-Poland Road, is nearby. Homes on the side streets span several decades.
South of 224, State Route 7 and South Avenue carry the hospital and newer development between the Midlothian and Western Reserve Road exits of I-680. The subdivisions here are newer, with two- and three-car attached garages and heavier doors.
Mill Creek Park and the Forest Glen Estates Historic District are on this side of the township, next to Canfield Township. Wooded lots and shade keep garage doors damp, so we see more rust on springs and hinges here.
Parts of the village of Poland in the east, and of Youngstown in the northeast, occupy land originally zoned to Boardman Township. Homes near the Poland line vary from older houses to newer streets.
