Between York and Westfield Townships, near the center of Medina County, lies Lafayette Township, home to 6,056 people at the 2020 census. The village of Chippewa Lake sits in its southeast corner, a slice of Medina reaches into its northeast, and the rest is township land.

Lafayette and Whittlesey were once villages in this township. The Medina County Home, one of the township's best-known buildings, has served county residents since 1894.
Chippewa Lake shaped this corner of the county. It's a natural inland lake that took its name from the Ojibwe people, and the village on its shore incorporated in 1920. In the 1880s a vacation resort grew up on its banks, later called Chippewa Lake Park. If you live near the lake, your home may have started as a summer place and been added onto over the years. If so, the garage may be small, or a separate building with a single door. Elsewhere in the township, you're more likely to have an attached two-car garage with a wider, heavier door.
The weather station at Chippewa Lake tells the story. The average January high is just 32.2°F, the average January low is 16.8°F, and a typical January brings about 9.9 inches of snow. The record low there is 26 degrees below zero.
Weather like that is rough on garage doors. Springs lose strength, grease thickens, and seals stiffen and crack. By the water, humid air rusts cables and hinges sooner. A yearly tune-up is the cheapest way to avoid a surprise.
U.S. Route 42 and State Route 162 share a short stretch of road in the township. York Township is the township's northern neighbor and Medina Township lies off its northeast side. Montville Township sits east, Westfield Township south and Chatham Township west. Guilford, Harrisville and Litchfield Townships touch its corners.
Lafayette is one of the communities that joined together in 1957 to form the Cloverleaf Local School District, along with Lodi, Seville, Chatham and today's Westfield Center. Ohio has just one more Lafayette Township, over in Coshocton County.
