What We Do in Cuyahoga Falls

Cuyahoga Falls, directly north of Akron, is the second-largest city in Summit County, with 51,114 residents at the 2020 census. They live in 23,406 households, and the city had 24,827 housing units. The Cuyahoga Valley National Park borders the city on the northwest, and 2.6% of residents still live in areas classed as rural.

From century-old houses near the river to newer streets out toward the national park, the city has garages of every age. We handle whatever yours needs, whether that means new torsion springs, a frayed cable, a door that came off its track or an opener that gave up, we answer 24/7, and we install new doors and openers across the city.

Garage Door Repairs Around the Falls

  • Springs that break on older and newer doors alike. We size replacements to the door; see spring replacement.
  • Detached garages on older lots with worn track, loose hinges and tired rollers. Hardware replacement.
  • Cables rusted where moisture collects near the floor; cable repair.
  • Doors pushed off track by a car, a snowblower or a broken cable. Off-track repair.
  • Openers, from worn Craftsman chain drives to newer LiftMaster and Genie models, that stop or reverse; opener repair.

Doors for Every Era of House

An older house near downtown looks right with a carriage-house door with window lites; a postwar ranch suits a clean raised-panel door; a newer home in the former township can carry a bold flush design. We install Clopay, Amarr and Wayne Dalton doors, insulated or standard, measured to your opening. See new garage doors.

A Chamberlain or LiftMaster belt-drive opener with phone control and battery backup is the usual upgrade. Details at opener installation.

Howe Avenue and the Northampton Industrial Land

After the 1986 merger, parts of the former Northampton Township were used for industrial development, and commercial growth picked up along Howe Avenue at the city's southern border. Warehouses, shops and retail loading docks there depend on commercial sectional doors. We repair them and service their operators; see commercial door repair.

Mills at the Falls

The town grew around a series of waterfalls on the Cuyahoga River that powered its mills. In 1812 Kelsey and Wilcox dammed the river and built flour, oil and saw mills, and houses followed in what became known as the old village. Development moved downstream when better water power was found, and in 1826 a dam built by William Wetmore flooded the old village. The settlement, first called Manchester, took the name Cuyahoga Falls at the Post Office's request, since Ohio already had several Manchesters. Judge Richardson laid out the village in 1826, and it incorporated in 1836. In 1841 the county commissioners named it the Summit County seat, but a popular vote went to Akron.

The population climbed from 4,020 in 1910 to 10,200 in 1920, 19,797 in 1930, 29,195 in 1950 and 47,922 in 1960. Founded as an industrial city, Cuyahoga Falls had become largely residential by the middle of the 20th century. If your house dates from those decades, the garage may have a door that was replaced once already, hanging on track and brackets that are older than the door.

Gorge Mist and River Damp

The Gorge, a 155-acre Metro Park, formed when glacial debris blocked the river's old route near today's downtown Akron and forced it into a new course. The water now rushes over a shale riverbed between ledges of Sharon conglomerate sandstone, under woods of oak, blackgum, tulip and yellow birch. Homes near the river and its ravines get more fog and damp air than the rest of the city.

Damp air works on the steel in a garage door: springs pit, cables fray at the bottom brackets and hinge pins stiffen. Winter adds road salt and hard freezes. A yearly tune-up keeps it all lubricated and balanced, and lets us replace a rusting part before it snaps.

Blossom, Schools and the National Park

Blossom Music Center, the summer home of the Cleveland Orchestra since its first Blossom Festival concert on July 19, 1968, sits on land in the former Northampton Township next to Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Its pavilion seats 6,051, with room for 15,000 more on the lawn, and in 2011 the orchestra's parent association sold 580 acres of undeveloped land there to the national park.

The original city makes up nearly all of the Cuyahoga Falls City School District. Cuyahoga Falls High School, home of the Black Tigers, had 1,247 students in 2023-24 and moved in January 2026 into a new 6-12 campus, replacing a Fourth Street building from 1922, and it shares vocational programs with Hudson, Kent, Stow-Munroe Falls, Tallmadge and Woodridge through the Six District Educational Compact. The northwest part of the city is in the Woodridge Local School District, formed in 1958, whose high school opened on January 29, 1962. The city's ZIP codes are 44221 and 44223, and METRO buses serve the city.

Cuyahoga Falls, Area by Area

The city is really two places joined together: the old river town and the former Northampton Township.

Along the River and the Gorge

The oldest part of the city grew up by the falls on the southern boundary. Gorge Metro Park dates to 1930, when a power company donated 144 acres; the site had earlier held the High Bridge Glens Amusement Park, opened in 1882. Mary Campbell Cave there recalls a girl captured in 1759 and released in 1764.

Northampton, Ward 8

Ottawa and Mingo hunters used this land before Europeans arrived. Simeon Prior came from Northampton, Massachusetts, with his wife and ten children in 1802 and named the township. In the War of 1812 two or three of Oliver Hazard Perry's vessels were built there. When it merged into the city in 1986, the first merger of a city and a township in Ohio, it became Ward 8 and kept special zoning to preserve some of its rural nature.

State Road and Route 8

Route 8 once ran up Akron-Cleveland Road, now State Road, before it was moved to the divided highway to the east. Cuyahoga Falls also annexed land along State Road from Boston Township.

Hampton Hills and the Akron Line

Hampton Hills Metro Park, which straddles Akron and Cuyahoga Falls, grew from 278 acres to 655 acres in 2010. The neighboring village of Silver Lake sends its students to the Cuyahoga Falls schools.
