What We Do in Mansfield

Mansfield, Richland County's seat, is the largest city in the Mid-Ohio region, with 47,534 residents at the 2020 census. It sits roughly halfway between Cleveland and Columbus on Interstate 71, in the western foothills of the Allegheny Plateau, and anchors a metropolitan area of 124,936 people. Its official nickname is "The Fun Center of Ohio," and it is also known as the Carousel Capital of Ohio.

The 2020 census counted 19,188 households in 21,410 housing units, with a homeowner vacancy rate of 1.9% and a median age of 39.9. Behind many of those homes is a garage door that has been working for decades. When it stops, call us: a technician can be at your Mansfield address the same day on most calls, to fix springs, cables, rollers or openers, or to measure for a new door.

Shops, Plants and Service Bays

Mansfield has been a manufacturing town since its railroad days, and two railroads, Norfolk Southern and the Ashland Railway, still serve the area. Loading docks, shops and service bays depend on overhead doors, and we offer commercial door repair and commercial operator service to keep them running.

Blockhouses, Railroads and a Factory City

James Hedges, Joseph Larwell and Jacob Newman laid out Mansfield in June 1808 on a fork of the Mohican River, in hilly country surrounded by farmland. They named it for Colonel Jared Mansfield, the U.S. Surveyor General who directed its planning, and platted it around a square that is today's Central Park. During the War of 1812 two blockhouses went up on the square, reportedly in a single night. After the war one of them served as Richland County's first courthouse until 1816, and later served as a school with Eliza Wolf as its teacher.

Mansfield became a village in 1828 and a city in 1857, with 5,121 people. The Sandusky, Mansfield and Newark Railroad arrived first, in 1846, followed by the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne and Chicago Railway in 1849 and the Atlantic and Great Western in 1863, and by the late 1880s four railroads made the city a center of manufacturing and trade. Dozens of factories turned out brass goods, doors, linseed oil, paper boxes and suspenders, and by 1890 the city had 13,473 residents. In the 20th century its greatest industrial period came from home appliance and stove making. The blockhouse became a symbol of the city's heritage at its 100th birthday in 1908 and was moved to South Park in 1929.

That history left Mansfield with a deep stock of older houses, from Victorian and early 20th-century streets near downtown to postwar neighborhoods on the edges. Many have detached garages, original tracks and springs that have been replaced more than once. We repair whatever failed and look over the remaining hardware before packing up.

Hilltop Winters

Mansfield's elevation is among the highest of any Ohio city: downtown's Central Park is about 1,240 feet above sea level, and the highest point in the city, at the Woodland Reservoir in the southwest, is about 1,493 feet. January is the coldest month, with a mean temperature of 26.5 degrees and about 5 days a year at or below zero. Lake Erie still shapes the winters, and snowfall averages 49.2 inches a season. The all-time record low is 22 below zero, set on January 20, 1985, and again on January 19, 1994.

Normal yearly precipitation is 42.49 inches, falling on about 150 days, so doors deal with moisture as well as cold. Springs rust, cables fray at the bottom brackets, and the first cold snap finds the weakest part. A fall tune-up is the best defense.

Carousels, Theaters and the County Fair

The Richland Carousel Park opened downtown in 1991, the first hand-carved indoor wooden carousel built and operated in the United States since the early 1930s. The Renaissance Theatre, built in 1927 and opened in 1928 as the Ohio Theatre, is a 1,402-seat movie palace that is home to the Mansfield Symphony and to the Miss Ohio pageant, which Mansfield has hosted since 1975. The Mansfield Playhouse, founded in 1929, is Ohio's second oldest community theatre, and the Mansfield Memorial Museum opened in 1889 as the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall.

Oak Hill Cottage, a Gothic Revival brick house built in 1847 and run by the Richland County Historical Society, was the setting of Mansfield native Louis Bromfield's first novel, The Green Bay Tree. Kingwood Center, a 47-acre estate and gardens, was the home of industrialist Charles Kelly King. The Richland County Fair has been held here since October 26, 1849, and Mansfield hosted the Ohio State Fair in 1872 and 1873. The Mansfield/Mehock Relays, a high school track meet, have been held every April since 1927, apart from the Second World War years.

Mansfield City Schools enroll 4,591 students. The Ohio State University has a regional campus here, shared with North Central State College, and Ashland University's nursing college opened on its Balgreen Campus on August 20, 2012. The Mansfield/Richland County Public Library has served the area since 1887, and Richland County Transit runs 9 fixed bus routes.

Mansfield, Area by Area

Mansfield has 33 parks, from half-acre Betzstone Park to 35-acre South Park, and its neighborhoods climb and dip with the hills. Here is how the city breaks down for us.

Downtown and the Carousel District

Central Park, the original town square, still holds one of the concrete Lincoln Highway markers that Boy Scouts set coast to coast on September 1, 1928, and the carousel, the Renaissance and the Playhouse are all nearby. Apartment buildings and older houses around downtown keep us busy with spring and opener repairs.

Woodland and the Southwest

The Woodland neighborhood is home to the Mansfield Art Center, opened in 1945, and the Woodland Reservoir on Woodland Road marks the highest point in the city. Hills mean sloped driveways, and a door on a sloped slab needs its bottom seal and track set carefully.

South Park

The city's largest park is where the War of 1812 blockhouse has stood since 1929.

The North Side

The Richland B&O Bike Trail, opened in 1995 on an abandoned rail line, ends at North Lake Park. Mansfield Lahm Regional Airport, city-owned and home to the 179th Airlift Wing, holds an air show each July.

Park Avenue West and Toward Ontario

The Lincoln Highway through Mansfield on Park Avenue East and Park Avenue West became U.S. Route 30 in 1928. Today the Martin Luther King Jr. Freeway carries U.S. 30, and the suburban city of Ontario borders Mansfield on the west, with Madison Township to the east.
