Lexington grew up where Amariah Watson dammed the Clear Fork for a sawmill, and today the village spreads across Troy and Washington townships with 4,848 residents (2020). Most of it is in eastern Troy Township, home to 7,116 people. The census counted 2,042 households in 2,134 homes, with only 4.3% of those homes standing empty, and 31.6% of households, close to one in three, had children.

Delaware, Wyandot and Mohawk peoples lived here first, in longhouses in permanent villages where they grew corn, beans and squash. Amariah Watson Jr., a land speculator, founded Lexington in 1812 and named it out of respect for his father, who had fought in the Revolutionary War, whose first battle was fought at Lexington, Massachusetts. In 1813 Watson built a water-powered sawmill on the Clear Fork, and the mill drew more settlers. The first road through town is today's State Route 97, and the second is Lexington-Ontario Road.
Lexington was recognized as a village in 1839. The railroad came through in 1850, and by 1853 the village had more than 50 businesses. The cemetery, on land Watson once owned, was fenced in 1857, its sexton house built in 1863 and its row of maple trees planted in 1889. The Old Stone House, built by James Gass in 1843, sheltered many freedom seekers on the Underground Railroad. In 1894 Harry F. Smith, who grew up here, built the village's first outdoor lighting system, powered by steam, and he later became known as the Father of the Clear Fork Reservoir.
The river keeps the air damp, and damp plus freezing nights is the recipe for rusty torsion springs and swollen weatherstrip. The worst of it shows up in January, when a spring that has been creaking all fall finally breaks.

A Civil War Gatling gun once decorated the Lexington Square; in 1958 the village donated it to the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, where it remains. The Lexington Local School District runs Central, Eastern and Western elementary schools, and a new consolidated building for grades 7 through 12, Lexington Junior High and High School, opened for the 2022-23 school year. The village has a branch of the Mansfield-Richland County Public Library, and the Richland B&O Bike Trail passes through on its way between Butler and Mansfield. Writer Candice Millard, 2018 Ohio Mr. Football Cade Stover and swimmer Hannah Stevens, the 2017 United States national champion, are among Lexington's notable people.
Around the village, homes range from older houses near the square to newer subdivisions on the edges of the village. We see extension springs on old detached garages and torsion systems on newer attached ones, and we carry parts for both on every truck.
