Lake County lines the Lake Erie shore east of Cleveland. Painesville is the county seat and Mentor the largest city, and the 2020 census counted 232,603 people. It is Ohio's smallest county by land area but its third-largest by total area, because most of the county, 77% of it, lies under the lake. Lake County is part of the Cleveland metropolitan area.

Summer Estates and a County Made From Two
The Erie people lived here before the French arrived in the early 1600s and claimed the land for New France. After France's defeat in the Seven Years' War it passed to Great Britain, then became part of the Connecticut Western Reserve after the Revolutionary War, and the Connecticut Land Company bought it in 1795.
Lake County was established on March 6, 1840, from land given by Cuyahoga and Geauga counties. Seven northern Geauga townships and Willoughby Township from Cuyahoga petitioned for the new county, and because they did not have enough territory to meet the requirements for a county, the northern border was drawn to include land under Lake Erie. Today the county is mostly suburban, but it was once a country retreat for well-off Clevelanders, and during the early 1900s a number of them kept big summer estates here.
Beach Ridges, Marshes and Lake Wind
Several of the county's east-west roads follow old beach ridges, shorelines of the glacial lakes that formed while the ice melted back. South Ridge is the Whittlesey beach at about 740 feet, Middle Ridge is the Arkona beach at about 690 feet, North Ridge is what remains of the Warren beach at 685 feet, and Lake Shore Boulevard in Mentor follows the Elkton beach. Mentor Marsh, an abandoned Grand River channel, is a state nature preserve and a National Natural Landmark. Headlands Beach State Park, at the northern end of State Route 44, is the longest natural beach in Ohio, and the Grand River, the state's second wild and scenic river, reaches Lake Erie at Fairport Harbor. The state began buying land for Headlands in 1951 and 1952, and it opened in 1953 as Painesville Beach State Park before taking its present name two years later. The Holden Arboretum in Kirtland, with more than 3,600 acres, is one of the largest arboreta and botanical gardens in the country, Squire's Castle stands in Cleveland Metroparks' North Chagrin Reservation in Willoughby Hills, and part of the Grand River Valley wine region covers the eastern half of the county.
Snow, wind off the water and road salt all work on garage doors here. Seals freeze to the floor, springs rust and snap in the cold, and track bolts loosen when a door is slammed by the wind. A fall tune-up catches most of that early.
Getting Around Lake County
Freeways
Interstate 90 runs northeast to southwest through the county, roughly parallel to State Route 2, and north-south State Route 44 ties the two together. Those three freeways are the county's main traffic arteries. U.S. Routes 6 and 20 and Interstate 271 also serve the county.
Transit and Rail
Laketran, the third-largest transit system in Northeast Ohio, runs buses throughout the county and into downtown Cleveland. CSX and Norfolk Southern provide main-line freight service, and Lake County Executive Airport serves the Willoughby area.
