This was farm country in the old Orange Township, and by the late 1880s dairy farming and cheese making were its main industry. In 1924 residents of the township's northwestern quadrant voted to break away, and the village of Pepper Pike was born. The name is said to come from the Pepper family, who lived and worked along the main road, the turnpike. It became a city in 1970, and in the late 2000s the World Book of Facts put it among the seven strangest city names in the country.
Growth came after the war: 874 people in 1950, 3,217 in 1960 and 5,382 in 1970. The 2020 count found 2,597 housing units, and even now 4.0% of residents live in areas the Census Bureau classes as rural. A wide two- or three-car door weighs a lot, and the springs that balance it work hard every day.
