Few places on our map are as small as Chippewa Lake, and few have a better story. The village sits on Chippewa Lake, a natural inland lake in Medina County. The whole village fits on about 160 acres, and the 2020 census found 654 residents.

The village was once called Chippewa-on-the-Lake and was incorporated in 1920. Its story is tied to the water. In the 1880s, Oscar Townsend and the Cleveland, Lorain & Wheeling Railroad built a vacation resort on the shore that became Chippewa Lake Park.
The village grew slowly: 22 residents in 1930, 341 in 1970 and 823 in 2000. By 2010 there were 404 housing units on those 160 or so acres. That's a lot of houses close together. On lots like these, garages can be tight on the sides and short on headroom, so we take measurements before recommending any door or opener.
Chippewa Lake has its own weather records, and they explain a lot. January averages a low of about 17°F. December and January each average close to 10 inches of snow, and the coldest reading on record is 26 below zero.
Cold like that is hard on garage doors. A worn spring tends to snap on exactly that kind of morning. Snow drifts against the door, melts into the bottom seal and freezes it to the floor. Living next to the water adds damp air, which rusts cables and hinges faster. If the door refuses to move in January, leave the opener button alone. Not at all. A lakeside cottage gets the same care 24/7, as a house in Akron or Cleveland.
Damp air off the water keeps steel parts wet longer. Springs, cables and hinges rust sooner, and rust weakens them. Lubrication and a yearly check slow it down.
