What We Do in Parma

Parma is a big place to look after. It is the largest suburb in Ohio, with 81,146 people counted in 2020, and its streets stretch from Brookpark Road on the north edge to Sprague Road on the south edge. That adds up to thousands of garages, built in very different decades.

We fix broken springs, snapped cables, worn-out openers and doors that came off their tracks anywhere in the city. A few Parma homes go back to the 1920s. Most came later, in the huge building wave after World War II. Each era has its own weak spots, and knowing them tells us which parts to load before we head your way.

Repairs for Parma's Boom-Year Garages

  • Old side-mounted springs. Many older doors still lift with extension springs stretched along the tracks. We swap both and thread safety cables through them. More on spring repair.
  • Doors out of balance after decades of piecemeal fixes. We rebalance first, then set the opener's force and travel.
  • Scraping doors, bent tracks and rusty cables. See off-track repair and cable repair.

New Doors and Openers for Parma Homes

A garage from the 1950s boom often has a single opening and a low header, and a Ridgewood-era home can be tighter still. Clopay, Amarr and Wayne Dalton all make doors in sizes that fit older Parma openings, and an insulated door quiets things down when the garage shares a wall with the kitchen. See door installation.

Openers built before 1993 have no photo-eye sensors near the floor, so replacing one is a real safety upgrade. We install LiftMaster, Chamberlain and Genie units and fix sensors, remotes and keypads. See opener installation.

Shops in the Polish and Ukrainian Villages

Ridge Road's Polish Village is a strip of small, family-owned businesses and medical offices, and State Road's Ukrainian Village is a commercial district too. When a business there has an overhead door that jams or won't close, see our commercial door repair page.

How Parma Was Built, and Why It Matters for Your Door

Parma began as farm country. The township was organized in 1826 and stayed mostly agricultural for about a hundred years. The first big housing project was H. A. Stahl's Ridgewood Gardens, started in 1919 and planned as a garden-city “model village.” Parma became a village in 1924 and a city in 1931.

A building boom was already underway by 1941. Then came the real rush. Between 1950 and 1960 the population jumped from 28,897 to 82,845, and by 1956 Parma was the fastest growing city in the United States. It peaked at 100,216 residents in 1970.

What does that mean for your garage? A huge share of Parma houses went up in the same short window, and their garages went up with them. A garage from the mid-1950s has now been through about seventy Ohio winters. Over that time, doors, springs and openers get replaced one piece at a time, and the pieces don't always match. It's common to find a newer door hanging on old tracks, or a newer opener pulling a door that nobody rebalanced.

Homes from the Ridgewood years and the 1930s can have narrower openings and less room above the door than modern garages. So we measure the opening, headroom and side room before quoting anything new. That way, what we install actually fits.

Higher Ground, Same Hard Winters

Parma sits well above the lakefront. Stahl even advertised Ridgewood as land “325 feet above Lake Erie,” and the old Henninger House, built in 1849, stands on one of the higher points in Cuyahoga County. Higher ground doesn't spare you from winter, though. Parma gets the same cold snaps, freeze-and-thaw swings and salted streets as the rest of Northeast Ohio.

Here's how that shows up on a garage door. Springs are steel under constant tension, and an aging spring often lets go on a bitter morning. Salty slush melts off your car and pools along the door's lower edge, right where the lift cables attach to the bottom brackets. Rubber seals stiffen, crack and freeze to the slab. If your door is frozen down, stop pressing the button. The opener can strip its gear or pull a cable off the drum. Call us instead. We're available 24/7, and a real human answers, never AI.

Finding Your Street in Parma

We cover all of Parma. These are the roads we use to get around town.

North to south: West 130th Street along the west edge, then York Road, Ridge Road (State Route 3), West 54th Street, State Road (State Route 94) and Broadview Road (State Route 176) on the east side.

East to west: Brookpark Road on the north border, then Snow Road, West Ridgewood Drive, West Pleasant Valley Road and Sprague Road on the south border. Pearl Road (U.S. 42) crosses the north end of the city.

Landmarks: The Ukrainian Village on State Road between Tuxedo Avenue and Grantwood Drive. The Polish Village on Ridge Road between Pearl Road and Thornton Avenue. The Henninger House and the West Creek Watershed.

Across the city line, we also serve Cleveland and Brooklyn to the north, Brooklyn Heights and Seven Hills to the east, North Royalton and Broadview Heights to the south, and Brook Park, Middleburg Heights and Parma Heights to the west.

Parma, Area by Area

Ridgewood

The Ridgewood name goes back to Stahl's 1919 plan: a garden city on 1,000 acres, meant for about 40,000 residents, with churches, schools, a movie theater and a community house. It lives on in West Ridgewood Drive and in the Ridgewood course, where all three Parma high schools play their home golf matches. Houses from those early decades are some of the oldest in the city, so we expect original openings and older framing there.

Ukrainian Village on State Road

State Road between Tuxedo Avenue and Grantwood Drive was named Ukrainian Village in September 2009, and it hosts the Ukrainian Independence Day parade every August. If you live on a side street off this stretch, tell us the nearest cross street when you call. It helps us find you quickly.

Polish Village on Ridge Road

Ridge Road from Pearl Road to Thornton Avenue became Polish Village on May 1, 2011. It's a strip of small, family-owned businesses and medical offices. Through the year it hosts parades for Polish Constitution Day in May, the St. Charles Carnival and Independence Day in July, and Christmas in December.

Henninger House and West Creek

The Henninger House is the oldest standing home in Parma, and it's planned to be part of the proposed Quarry Creek Historic District. The West Creek Preservation Agency works to protect it along with the West Creek Watershed. For older homes near protected sites like these, a carriage-house style door can keep the classic look while opening like a modern one.

Schools, campuses and highways

Normandy High School, Valley Forge High School and Byers Field, the district's stadium, are easy landmarks to give us. So are the Parma campuses of Cuyahoga Community College and Bryant & Stratton College. I-480 runs just north of the city, and the Jennings Freeway carries State Route 176 from Broadview Road toward downtown Cleveland.

Parma Questions

It might be, but many doors from the boom years have been swapped or patched since. Springs stretched along the side tracks, wood panels, or an opener with no sensors near the floor are all signs of older parts. On a $49 tune-up (per door, homes only) we check the whole system and tell you what’s worth keeping.

Yes. We work on homes and side streets along State Road and Ridge Road, including both districts.

No. Parma Heights broke away from Parma Township in 1911 and became its own village. Today they are separate communities, though both are served by the Parma City School District. We work in both; here is our Parma Heights page.

Most Parma homes date from the boom. The city grew from 28,897 people in 1950 to 100,216 in 1970, so a typical garage here is now somewhere between 55 and 75 years old. Structure that old is usually fine, but springs, cables, rollers and openers have often been replaced more than once, and not always with parts that match.

Yes, all of it: from Brookpark Road and the I-480 corridor in the north, across Snow Road, Ridgewood and Pleasant Valley, down to Sprague Road on the southern border.
