Geauga County lies east of Cleveland and south of Lake County, and the 2020 census counted 95,397 residents. Chardon is the county seat and its largest city, and the county is part of the Cleveland metropolitan area. In Onondaga and in Seneca, the word behind the county's name means raccoon, and before it named a county it named the Grand River.

Geauga dates from March 1, 1806, when it was split off from Trumbull County and became the Western Reserve's second county. Its first settlement came eight years before that, in 1798, when three families from Connecticut settled at Burton, still the county's oldest settlement. Like other early Western Reserve towns, Burton has a town square patterned after the village greens of New England, and it is home to Century Village, a museum village of 19th-century buildings run by the Geauga Historical Society, and the Geauga County Fairgrounds.
Where to put the county seat was argued over for decades. Northern townships wanted it at Champion, the town renamed Painesville in 1832. Southern townships wanted a central location and used a tract of land donated by Peter Chardon Brooks, which became Chardon; it was selected in 1809, but the dispute never really ended. As the seven northern townships outgrew the sixteen southern ones, a petition to split them off went to the Ohio House on January 21, 1840, and Lake County was established that March. Geauga's present boundaries date from then.
The Illinoian and Wisconsinan glaciers remade this land, leaving glacial till and a jumbled drainage system. The headwaters of the Cuyahoga, the Chagrin and the Grand rivers are all in Geauga County, and portions of all three are designated Ohio Scenic Rivers. The east branch of the Cuyahoga starts in Hambden, Claridon and Burton townships, the east branch of the Chagrin at Bass Lake in Munson Township and the southwest corner of Chardon, and the Grand in Parkman and Troy townships and Swine Creek in Middlefield Township. Most streams drain to Lake Erie, but Silver Creek in Troy Township flows to the west branch of the Mahoning River and on to the Ohio River. The Geauga Park District, established in August 1961, began with a 4-acre park on Woodin Road in Chardon Township and has grown to 22 open parks covering more than 10,000 acres. Punderson State Park in Newbury has 741 acres and a 150-acre lake; the state bought the land and lake in 1948 and began developing the park in 1951.
No county in northern Ohio gets more precipitation. Most of Geauga averages above 42 inches a year, and a few spots top 44 inches. Heavy snow means heavy use: doors cycle more, springs work harder in the cold, and meltwater freezes the bottom seal to the floor. Long driveways also mean salt and slush tracked into the garage for weeks at a time.
Because the county is mostly rural, Geauga County Transit runs a door-to-door, reservation-based service instead of fixed bus routes. The Geauga County Airport, southeast of Middlefield, broke ground on August 31, 1967, and officially opened on September 29, 1968, on land purchased by the Middlefield Chamber of Commerce and donated to the county.
Bainbridge Township counted 12,893 residents in 2020, Chesterland 7,074, Auburn Township 6,574 and the village of Middlefield 2,748.
Kent State University's Geauga campus is in Burton Township. It began as an academic center in 1964, became a regional campus in 1976 and sits on 87 acres.
