Your garage door's springs are sized for the exact weight of your door. An insulation kit adds weight, even 10 to 20 pounds, and the springs were never meant to lift it.
A new insulated door is built as one system: the insulation is inside the sections from the factory, and the springs are sized for that door when we install it.

A plain steel door with no insulation has very little. A door with foam boards inside the sections is a clear step up. A door with foam that is injected and fills the whole section usually insulates best for its thickness, and it makes the door stiffer too. Brands measure R-value in slightly different ways, so it's best to compare doors from the same brand. Seals matter as much as the R-value: a well-insulated door with gaps around it still lets cold in.

We don’t. The springs are sized for your door’s exact weight, and even 10 to 20 pounds of insulation overloads them. They wear out sooner, it costs you more, and when an overloaded spring breaks it can damage and loosen the panels. A new insulated door is the better choice.
It depends on your garage. An attached or heated garage, or one with a room above it, benefits most from a higher R-value. We’ll help you choose during the free estimate.
For most attached garages, yes. It keeps the garage warmer in winter, cooler in summer, and quieter all year. The panels are also stronger than single-layer steel.

R-value measures how well the insulation material resists heat, and higher is better. U-factor measures how much heat moves through the whole door, including the steel skins, seals and windows, and lower is better, so it tells you more about the finished door. Look for the DASMA Thermal Performance Verification badge: it means the door’s U-factor was checked by an independent lab.
