Summit County is an urban county in Northeast Ohio, and with 540,428 residents at the 2020 census it ranks fourth in population among Ohio's counties. Akron is both the county seat and the largest city. The county makes up the Akron metropolitan area, which is part of the larger Cleveland-Akron-Canton combined statistical area.

Summit County was formed on March 3, 1840, from portions of Medina, Portage and Stark counties. Portage gave up the most: its present boundaries date from that year, when the new county took ten Portage townships, three from Medina and two from Stark. The name comes from the canal. The highest elevation on the Ohio and Erie Canal is in this county, so it was called Summit.
That canal was built during the 1820s and early 1830s to connect Akron with the Cuyahoga River near its mouth in Cleveland, and a few years later with the Ohio River near Portsmouth. It carried freight from 1827 until 1861, when railroads ended the demand, and then served as a water source for towns and industries until 1913. Surviving stretches in the Akron to Cleveland area are now managed by the National Park Service or the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, and the Ohio and Erie Canal Historic District is a National Historic Landmark.
The southern border of the old Connecticut Western Reserve also passes through the southern part of the county, which is why the county's east and west borders have jogs in them.
The largest portion of Cuyahoga Valley National Park is in northern Summit County, and about 100 waterfalls are found in the Cuyahoga Valley. The best known, 65-foot Brandywine Falls, is the tallest in the park and the fifth-tallest in Ohio. Summit Metro Parks, set up on December 31, 1921, as the Akron Metropolitan Park District, was the second park system created under Ohio's metropolitan park law, and today it manages 16 developed parks and six conservation areas, and part of the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail. In New Franklin, the eight Portage Lakes, part of Portage Lakes State Park, cover 2,034 acres of water used for boating, fishing and swimming.
Valley fog, lake damp and wooded lots all mean moisture, and moisture means rust on the bottom brackets, cable drums and hinge pins. Add winter salt from I-77 and State Route 8 and the lowest panel of a steel door takes a beating. We replace corroded hardware, fit fresh weatherstripping and balance the door during every tune-up.
Interstates 76, 77, 271, 277 and 480 all run through Summit County, and the Ohio Turnpike, I-80, crosses the north end. U.S. Route 224 is the main east-west U.S. highway.
State Route 8 links Akron with the northern suburbs, and Routes 18, 21, 59, 82, 91, 93, 241, 261, 303 and 619 serve the rest of the county.
Akron had 190,469 residents in 2020. Then come Cuyahoga Falls with 51,114, Stow with 34,483, Green with 27,475, Barberton with 25,191, Hudson with 23,110 and Twinsburg with 19,248.
The University of Akron is in Akron, Stark State College has an Akron campus, and Kent State University runs an academic center in Twinsburg.
