Choosing a New Door in Elyria

Hospital, College and Factory Doors

Elyria's 2021 financial report listed UH Elyria Medical Center as the city's largest employer, followed by Lorain County government and Lorain County Community College, and four manufacturers made the top ten. Plants, loading docks, public garages and service bays like those run on oversized overhead sectional doors. We handle commercial door repair and commercial operators as well as homes.

Ely + Illyria = Elyria

Heman Ely founded the village in 1817, building a log house, a dam, a gristmill and a sawmill beside the Black River. The name joins his surname with Illyria, the ancient Greek and Roman name for the western Balkans. Ely also picked the county's name: the first proposal was "Colerain," but he chose "Lorain," after the French province of Lorraine.

Elyria had just 168 residents in 1830. By 1900 it held 8,791 people, Elyria Memorial Hospital opened in 1908, and manufacturing and shops filled out the town in the decades that followed. The population reached 20,474 in 1920, 43,782 in 1960 and a peak of 57,538 in 1980.

That long run of building means garages from nearly every era. Older ones behind downtown houses may have narrow openings, sagging headers or doors still hung on extension springs, while postwar and newer homes more often have attached garages with torsion springs and wider doors. River Valley Damp and Lake Winters

The Black River cuts through the middle of Elyria, and river valleys hold moisture. That damp air rusts bottom brackets, cable drums and hinges, and a steel door's lowest section can corrode from the inside where water sits against it. Winter adds snow and road salt, and a bottom seal frozen to the slab can tear the moment the opener pulls.

Waterfalls, Bears and a Rebuilt High School

The Black River has two impressive falls inside the city. Cascade Park lies in a ravine carved by the same glaciers that made the Great Lakes, centered on the river, and each of the two falls is about 40 feet high and nearly sheer. From 1920 to 1980 the park even kept black bears, three of them in cages set against a rock. Downstream, shale cliffs line the river in the Black River Reservation of Lorain County Metro Parks.

Elyria High School, grades 9 through 12, is the city school district's high school. The old building was torn down in 2010 so that a new one could be built. Two other high schools have closed: Elyria West in 1996, with its building demolished in April 2023, and Spring Valley in 2017.

Lorain County Transit is based here, the Elyria Amtrak station is served by the Floridian and the Lake Shore Limited, both passing through in the middle of the night, and the Ohio Turnpike, Interstate 90, US 20 and State Routes 2, 57, 113 and 301 all serve the city.

Elyria, Area by Area

Elyria spreads out in every direction from the forks of the river, and each part of the city has a different mix of houses.

Downtown, Broad Street and Ely Park

Downtown grew up around Broad Street, pictured on postcards as early as 1915, with Ely Park, the Old County Courthouse and the Lorain County Administration Building close by. If your house is on one of the older side streets, the garage may be detached and built for a smaller car.

Cascade Park and the River

If your home backs onto the wooded ravines around the park, the garage lives with shade and damp. From the forks, the river flows north past Sheffield toward Lorain. Leaves, shade and damp are the enemies of garage hardware here, so we pay extra attention to rust.

Eastern Heights, Northwood and Westwood

Elyria City Schools rebuilt around three kindergarten-to-eighth-grade campuses named for these parts of town, each paired with an elementary school, plus Ely and Hamilton elementary schools. Whatever part of town you are in, the door on your garage gets the same careful look.

The South Side and the Route 57 Bypass

Ely Stadium, built in 1927, is on the south side, and in 2016 voters passed a school bond issue that included a new athletic complex there. Route 301 meets US 20 and Route 10 near Elyria, and inside the city Route 113 shares the road with Route 57 and then Route 301 before joining US 20 at Cleveland Street, the road signed for Grafton.

The North Side and the Turnpike

Route 113 was extended to Elyria in 1939 and on to its present eastern end in 1940. The Ohio Turnpike has an Elyria exit at Route 57, and from the Indiana line to Elyria the Turnpike carries Interstate 90 as well. Route 2 joins Interstate 90 near the city, and North Ridgeville borders Elyria on the east.
