This page covers the village of Windham in eastern Portage County, home to 1,666 people at the 2020 census, and the township around it. In 1942 the federal government picked Windham as the site of a camp for workers at the newly built Ravenna Arsenal, and over the 1940s the village grew by 1,148.7%, the largest increase of any municipality in the nation.
Growth that fast left the village with many homes from the same era, and many of their garages have had several doors come and go. We fix whatever is hanging there now: springs, cables, rollers, a door off its track, an opener that has quit. Ring us 24/7 for same-day service on most calls, often within 1 hour.
A new steel door from Clopay, Amarr or Wayne Dalton is lighter, tighter and far easier on the springs than a 1950s wood slab. Pick an insulated model for an attached garage. More on new doors, and on Genie or Chamberlain units at opener installation.
On September 11, 1810, sixteen men met in Becket, Massachusetts, at the home of Thatcher Conant to talk about buying land in Ohio. That November the group bought about 14,825 acres from Caleb Strong and split them into 100 lots. Several families gave part of their land near the center for a village green, as townships in the Western Reserve commonly did. They left Massachusetts on May 2, 1811, and arrived six weeks later. The first religious service followed on July 28, 1811, and the Congregational church they founded still stands on the Green.
The township was first called Strongsburg, after Strong, then Sharon, and finally Windham, after Windham, Connecticut. The village incorporated in 1892 and left Windham Township on October 12, 1993. Its population went from 316 in 1940 to 3,946 in 1950. In 2010 the village had 1,045 housing units and 786 households, with a median age of 31.6.
Windham gets real winters, and a garage door feels each one. Cold stiffens roller grease, snow drifts against the panels, and a door that freezes to the floor puts all the strain on the opener. Worn springs tend to quit on the first bitter mornings of the season.
Before the cold arrives, book a tune-up: we lubricate and balance the door, test the auto-reverse and check the seal.
Windham's public schools, an exempted village district, consist of an elementary school, a middle school and Windham High School. Windham Academy, a private school, was chartered on February 19, 1835, the 44th academy chartered in Ohio, and Windham High School was founded in 1883 across the street from today's building. The county library system keeps a Windham branch too.
Interstate 80 and the Ohio Turnpike cross the village with no interchange. A weekday bus route of the Portage Area Regional Transportation Authority runs from Ravenna and also serves Garrettsville and Hiram.

Often it can. Joists strong enough for the rail and a door that moves freely by hand are the two things we confirm before mounting it and setting the safety sensors.
Yes, both, with same-day service on most calls.
Yes. A balanced door should stay put halfway up. If it drops or fights you, the springs are weak, and we can adjust or replace them.
