Wakeman is a Huron County village on the Vermilion River with 990 residents at the 2020 census. It takes its name from Jesup Wakeman of Fairfield County, Connecticut, who was involved in western land speculation between 1800 and 1840. In 2010 the village had 402 households in 441 housing units; 54.0% of households were married couples, 38.3% had children, and the median age was 36.7.
A small village still has plenty of garage doors to keep running. When yours stops, ring us for same-day service on most calls, often within 1 hour at your Wakeman home.

Need a new door? Clopay, Amarr or Wayne Dalton (installing a door), plus a LiftMaster or Chamberlain operator (openers we fit).
The land around Wakeman is generally rolling, with sandy, loamy soil and more clay in places. A sandstone known as Wakeman Buff, or spider web sandstone, was once quarried here, and a quarry in northern Wakeman worked from 1877 into the late 1910s or early 1920s and was also known for Berea Sandstone. In the 1930s and 1940s the village fielded a semi-pro baseball team, the Wakeman Red Caps, who played at Wakeman Field and grew out of the Wakeman Baseball Club, established in 1889.
The village grew from 452 people in 1930 to 728 in 1960 and passed a thousand, 1,047, in 2010. Houses from those decades have a mix of detached and attached garages, and many still run on original springs.
On still winter nights cold air slides down into the Vermilion River valley, and frost coats door seals and tracks by dawn. A spring that has lasted for decades can still snap on a frozen morning.
A checkup before the cold catches worn parts in time.
The Vermilion River rises at Mud Lake in Ashland County and runs north through Huron, Erie and Lorain counties, past Savannah and Wakeman, to Lake Erie at Vermilion. Its name refers to the reddish clay that lines much of its route, and the water is often muddy after rain. The state stocks it with steelhead trout each fall through spring, the westernmost Ohio river to get a yearly stocking, and it also holds smallmouth and largemouth bass, channel catfish and bluegill.
The village is in the middle of Wakeman Township, organized in 1824, named for Jesup Wakeman as one of its first landowners and home to 2,761 people in 2020. Public schooling is run by the Western Reserve Local School District, and the village has a branch of the Huron County Community Library. Relief pitcher Andrew Chafin and singer-songwriter Emily Keener both have Wakeman roots.
