Canal Fulton is a small city on the Tuscarawas River in western Stark County, entirely surrounded by Lawrence Township, and 5,325 people lived there in 2020. Its name joins the Ohio Canal with that of a local pioneer, Ben Fulton. The census counted 2,266 households in 2,378 housing units, 64.8% of occupied homes were owner-occupied, and the homeowner vacancy rate was only 0.8%. The median age was 44.4.

Matthew Rowland, who arrived by ox team, platted Milan on March 23, 1814, the first settlement west of the Tuscarawas in Stark County. He named it after the city in Italy, at a time when frontier towns were often given European names, and sold its 79 lots at auction in Canton. His son-in-law built the first log cabin, and Rowland added a gristmill and a sawmill, though neither did very well.
The township around it, laid off in December 1815, was named for Captain James Lawrence, whose last words in the War of 1812, "Don't Give up the Ship," are still its motto. By 1833 Lawrence Township had three gristmills, three sawmills, three tanneries and two stores. Building the canal between 1826 and 1828 brought the town of Fulton to the opposite bank; Fulton was platted on May 16, 1826, and took the name Canal Fulton in 1832. Milan built churches, cemeteries and a grocery for the hundreds of canal workers, and when the B&O railroad arrived it briefly pulled ahead of the Port of Canal Fulton again, until the main highways settled on the Fulton side. President John Quincy Adams visited in 1843, and in 1853 Canal Fulton absorbed both Milan and West Fulton. Milan survives as a quiet residential area of the city.
A community school opened in 1850, railroad tracks were finished on the west bank in 1869, and by 1886 a new school held all 12 grades. Two centuries of building on both banks left Canal Fulton with garages of every vintage, and on any given week we replace brittle extension springs on a detached garage by the river and a torsion spring on a newer attached one.
Once the leaves are down, the Tuscarawas valley settles into damp, grey cold. Moisture beads on hinges and spring coils, and meltwater from the driveway freezes into a ridge right where the door meets the floor.
Chip that ridge away before the opener tries to push through it. A late-autumn door checkup finds rust and tired springs while the weather is still mild.
Lawrence Township, which had 13,548 residents in 2020, surrounds the city in the northwest corner of Stark County, with New Franklin to the north and Wayne County's Baughman and Chippewa townships to the west. The northern half of the township is served by the Northwest Local School District and the southern half by the Tuslaw Local School District. Among Canal Fulton residents 25 and older, 95.8% have finished high school and 27.5% hold a bachelor's degree or higher.
