Newcomerstown is a Tuscarawas County village on the Tuscarawas River with 3,702 residents in 2020, a population the Census Bureau classes as entirely rural. The village is in the northern part of Oxford Township, a township of 4,789 in the county's southwestern corner. Its 1,568 households live in 1,788 housing units, and the median resident is 41.2.

The name goes back to a Lenape (Delaware) village founded in the 1760s by Netawatwees, known to traders as Newcomer, who had come west with his band from the Cuyahoga Falls area. The Lenape called the town Gekelukpechink, "still water"; it served as a meeting place for the Iroquois Great Council, had more than a hundred dwellings by 1771, and by 1776 more than seven hundred Lenape and several traders lived there. Soon after the Revolutionary War began, the Lenape moved west to Coshocton.
Explorer Christopher Gist had crossed the Tuscarawas Valley in 1750, and Moravian missionaries later met Netawatwees and received his invitation to his village. Later the Ohio and Erie Canal ran through the county, and its 15 Tuscarawas County locks ran from Lock 7, north of Zoar, down to Newcomerstown. The village had 476 people in 1850, then jumped from 1,251 in 1890 to 2,659 in 1900 and reached 4,564 by 1940. A village built across that whole century gives us everything from narrow detached garages near the river to postwar attached doors still running on their first springs.
Fog off the Tuscarawas settles into the low streets on cold mornings, and the damp gets into spring coils, hinge pins and the bottom rubber. After a freeze, that rubber can hold the door to the slab like glue.

Newcomerstown is the hometown of pitcher Cy Young, whom Major League Baseball honors every year with an honor bearing his name, and of Woody Hayes, the Ohio State football coach. Designer Norman Bel Geddes, film actor William Burress and journalist R. Beers Loos, father of writer Anita Loos, also came from here. The township around the village is one of six Ohio townships named Oxford.
The Newcomerstown school district was first established in 1856, but its first building just for grades 9 through 12 was not built until 1924, and the current high school on Beaver Street dates from 1965. Newcomerstown High won a boys baseball state title in 1929, and both Cy Young and Woody Hayes are counted among its famous alumni.
