Say it MAN-uh-way. This northern Portage County village along the Cuyahoga River had 1,001 residents at the 2020 census, and it has hovered close to that number for decades: 1,059 in 1950, 1,043 in 2010. In 2010 the village counted 477 housing units and 451 households, with a median age of 41.5.

The first settlers reached Mantua Township in 1798. The land that became the village belonged to the Tappan family of Ravenna, and in the 1840s it was laid out as Mantua Station, a stop on the Cleveland and Mahoning Valley Railroad. The village was incorporated as Mantua in 1898. Like the township, it is named for the Italian city of Mantua, honoring Napoleon, who took that city early in 1797.
Three Mantua properties are on the National Register of Historic Places: the Horace L. Hine House, the William H. Crafts House and the Mantua Station Brick Commercial District. The village grew from 215 people in 1880 to 676 in 1890, so some houses and outbuildings here are well over a century old. Garages added behind them later often have odd-sized openings, and we build or order doors to fit what is actually there.
The Cuyahoga flows through the southern part of the village, and low ground near a river holds moisture. That damp gets into hinges and roller bearings.

Mantua's best-known weekend is the Potato Festival, held every year for more than 45 years, with live music, food, rides, a parade and a 15k road race called the Potato Stomp. One year it served the world's largest helping of mashed potatoes and gravy, mashed in a cement mixer. The Ox Roast is another annual event, a fund-raiser for St. Joseph Church.
The village belongs to the Crestwood schools, a local district that also covers Mantua Township, most of Shalersville Township, the village of Hiram and western Hiram Township. Crestwood High School, for grades 7 to 12, and the district offices are in Mantua. Pro football linebacker Jack Lambert was born and raised here.

Maybe, but that is no problem. Doors come in custom widths, so yours gets built to the opening after we inspect the framing around it.
