What We Do in Euclid

East of Cleveland, on Lake Erie, the inner-ring suburb of Euclid stretches along the shore. At the 2020 census it had 49,692 residents, which made it the fourth-largest city in Cuyahoga County. It counted 26,107 housing units and 23,354 households that year.

We fix garage doors all over Euclid, from the lakefront to the streets near the Euclid Creek Reservation. Our Euclid calls range from a snapped spring at dawn to a full door-and-opener replacement.

What Euclid Doors Need Most

  • Springs on post-war garages. We swap old stretch-type springs in pairs and add safety cables, or replace torsion springs sized to your door. See spring repair.
  • Rusted cables and bottom brackets after years of Snowbelt salt. Learn more: cable replacement.
  • Crooked doors that jumped a roller out of the track. Learn more: track repair.
  • Old openers, including Craftsman, Genie, LiftMaster and Chamberlain units, plus photo eyes that no longer see each other. Learn more: sensor fixes.

Replacing a Post-War Euclid Door

A garage from the 1950s or 1960s often has a single-car opening and modest headroom. A new steel door is lighter than an old wood one, and an insulated model keeps an attached garage warmer through a Snowbelt winter. Our crews hang Wayne Dalton, Amarr and Clopay doors cut to the real opening. Learn more: replacement doors.

Euclid has a history with remote signals: the cordless telephone was invented here by George Sweigert in 1969. Today's openers pick up where that left off. A keypad and an app on a new Genie, Chamberlain or LiftMaster opener beat digging through a glove box for a remote. Learn more: openers we install.

Commercial Doors in an Industrial City

Euclid grew as an industrial center in the early 1900s. Plants, warehouses and shops here rely on sectional overhead doors and dock doors. Our commercial side keeps them moving; see commercial door operators.

From Vineyards to a Post-War Boom

Euclid began as part of Euclid Township, first mapped in 1796 and named for Euclid of Alexandria, the Greek mathematician. The first settlers in what is now the city were the Burke, Dille and Coleman families, and major settlement started in the spring of 1804. After the Civil War, the lake plain was known for its vineyards. Euclid Village incorporated from the northeast part of the township in 1903, grew into an industrial center, and became a city in 1930.

Then came the housing boom. Euclid had 12,751 people in 1930 and 17,866 in 1940. By 1950 it had 41,396, by 1960 it had 62,998, and in 1970 it peaked at 71,552. Euclid High School tells the same story: its building opened in late 1949 and was expanded in 1957, 1966 and 1972 as enrollment climbed to as many as 3,000 students.

So a large share of Euclid homes, and their garages, went up between the 1940s and the 1970s, and many of those garages are on their second or third door by now. If yours still has an older door, look for springs stretched along the tracks with no safety cable inside, a wood or early steel door that has grown heavy, and an opener that predates safety eyes. Each of those is worth a look before it fails.

Snowbelt Winters on the Lake

Euclid is part of the Lake Erie Snowbelt. Snow squalls blow in off the lake, especially before the lake freezes over for the winter. Squalls can dump a lot of snow in a short time, and wet, heavy snow drifts against garage doors that face the wind.

Ice is the real enemy. A seal glued to the concrete rips, and a motor fighting a stuck door strips gears and kinks the top section. Springs, already weakened by cold, break more often in these months. Road salt then goes to work on the cables and bottom brackets. If the door won't open on a snowy morning, don't force it. Call us for same-day service on most calls, often within 1 hour. We call you when we're on the way.

Getting Around Euclid

Euclid borders Cleveland to the west, South Euclid and Richmond Heights to the south, and Willowick, Wickliffe and Willoughby Hills to the east, with Lake Erie along the north. Construction of Interstate 90 and the Lakeland Freeway through Euclid began in the spring of 1961, and the work in Euclid was finished in November 1962. Euclid mail uses ZIP codes 44117, 44119, 44123, 44132 and 44143.

Euclid, Area by Area

The lakefront

Euclid has a beachfront along its northern edge. Homes near the water get the full force of the wind and the squalls that come off the lake. If you live close to the shore, expect more rust on springs, cables and hinges, and give the bottom seal extra attention.

Along the creek

The main branch of Euclid Creek runs from the Euclid Creek Reservation to Lake Erie. It flows over bedrock more than 360 million years old, and its highest waterfalls are where it has cut down to the Berea Sandstone, which resists erosion. A low ridge called the Euclid Moraine rises east of the creek. If you live on a street that climbs away from the water, tell us the cross street and we'll find you.

Near Euclid Creek

The creek's watershed is one of the most highly urbanized stretches of Ohio's Lake Erie shore, and about 68,000 people live in it. Euclid Creek Reservation was dedicated on June 24, 1936, the first unit of the Metroparks ever opened to the public. Homes near the wooded ravine stay shady and damp, so wood trim and bottom panels rot faster.

Around the high school and City Hall

Euclid High School's E-shaped building opened in 1949. The Old City Hall is faced with Euclid bluestone, a reminder of the stone quarried along Euclid Creek in the 1800s. Our Lady of the Lake School and Sts. Robert and William Catholic School are the city's two Catholic elementary schools, and Euclid City Schools is the public district. Naming the closest school or church on the phone helps us pinpoint your street.

Zoning that shaped the suburbs

Euclid gave its name to a landmark 1926 Supreme Court case, Village of Euclid v. Ambler Realty Co., which upheld local zoning. The village had split its land into six classes of use to keep industry from changing its character. The ruling opened the door for cities across the United States to adopt zoning rules of their own.

Euclid Questions

All of them: 44117, 44119, 44123, 44132 and 44143.

Not always. If the frame is sound and the door is steel, new springs, rollers and cables can make it work like new. If it’s a heavy, rotting wood door, a new steel door is often the better buy. We’ll price both.

Squalls pile wet snow at the base of the door, and a hard freeze locks it down. Clear that strip after each storm, and if the door still won’t budge, let us free it.

Yes, including sectional overhead doors, dock doors and their operators.
