With 13,877 residents in 2020, New Franklin covers a broad stretch of southwestern Summit County. It stretches from Coventry Township, Barberton and Norton on the north to Stark County's Lawrence Township on the south, with Green to the east and Chippewa Township in Wayne County to the west. Almost a quarter of its people (24.2%) live on land still counted as rural.

The area was founded in 1817 as Franklin Township. In 1997 the village of New Franklin was incorporated from part of the township, and its residents remained township citizens too. In November 2003 voters in both approved a merger, which took effect on January 1, 2005, ending Franklin Township in Summit County. The village officially became a city on March 5, 2006. The village had 2,191 people in 2000; the combined city counted 14,227 in 2010 and 13,877 in 2020.
Census takers in 2020 found 5,661 households (56.3% married couples) and 6,031 housing units, of which 6.1% were vacant. The median age is 47.5. Because the city was assembled from a whole township rather than grown outward from one town center, you'll find houses and garage doors from many different eras here.
New Franklin is home to Portage Lakes State Park, a public recreation area around the lakes, and to Craftsmen Park. Part of what used to be the Portage Lakes community in the old Franklin Township is now inside the city. The Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail, which follows the abandoned canal, has trailheads here as well as in Akron, Barberton and Clinton.
Lakes and low ground keep humidity high much of the year, which is rough on springs, cables and hinges, while winter winds pile snow against doors that face them. Our seasonal tune-up targets exactly those problems: rust, stiff hardware and worn bottom seals.
New Franklin is served by four public school districts. The north attends Coventry Local Schools, the extreme northwest Norton City Schools, and the west, along with the village of Clinton, the Northwest Local School District in Canal Fulton. The eastern half belongs to the Manchester Local School District, which serves a large portion of the city and runs Manchester High School, Manchester Middle School and Gilbert T. Nolley Elementary.
