What We Do in Lorain

Where the Black River empties into Lake Erie, Lorain has grown into the largest city in Lorain County and the ninth-largest in Ohio, with 65,211 residents at the 2020 census. They live in 26,595 households spread across 29,566 housing units, and only 2.2% of owner homes stood empty at that count.

Many of those homes have a garage, attached or out back. When a spring breaks at dawn or an opener dies with the car inside, one phone call gets a technician moving toward you, usually the same day. We repair springs, cables, rollers, track and openers, and we replace worn-out doors outright.

Lorain's Usual Garage Door Failures

  • Snapped torsion springs. The door suddenly will not lift, or the opener strains and quits. Leave it closed and call; our spring replacement page explains how we size a new pair.
  • Old extension springs on detached garages, often without safety cables. We replace them and add the cables.
  • Cables and brackets corroded by lake air and road salt. Cable repair covers the fix.
  • A door knocked out of its track by a car, a trash cart or a bent roller; see off-track doors.
  • Openers that hum, click or reverse, including older Craftsman, Genie and Chamberlain units we can still repair. Opener repair explains when a fix is enough.

New Doors for Old Lorain Garages

A plain steel door with a row of windows suits a 1920s frame house, and a carriage-house style dresses up a postwar ranch. Clopay, Amarr and Wayne Dalton doors all fit that bill, with insulated cores for a heated garage, and doors can be made for older openings that are narrower or shorter than today's standard. Browse new garage doors.

A LiftMaster or Chamberlain belt-drive opener hardly makes a sound, and a keypad saves digging for the remote at a detached garage. See opener installation.

Port, Rail and Mill Buildings

Lorain's working side runs along the river and the rails. Norfolk Southern freight trains run parallel to the shoreline, and the city's 2013 financial report listed a hospital system as the largest employer, with a steel company in the top four. Warehouses, shops and plant buildings like these depend on heavy overhead sectional doors, and we handle commercial door repair along with commercial operators.

Black River Village to Steel City

Settlement here goes back to 1807. Before 1834 the place was an unincorporated settlement called Black River Village, and in 1837 it was renamed Charleston, a name its own residents refused to use. It was incorporated as Lorain in 1874 and became a city in 1896.

Industry built the modern city. A shipbuilding yard launched ships such as the SS Greater Detroit in 1923, and the city was also home to an auto assembly plant and the steel mill on the south side. One of Lorain's nicknames is still Steel City. The census tells the story: 1,595 people in 1880, 16,028 in 1900, 37,205 in 1920 and a peak of 78,185 in 1970.

Growth that fast means many houses from the early 1900s through the postwar years, and garages built for the cars of each decade. An older detached garage may have a single-car opening, a header that has settled, or a door hung on old extension springs. Before quoting a new door we look at the framing, and when we repair an extension-spring door we add safety cables if they are missing.

Lake Wind on the Garage Door

Much of Lorain faces straight into the weather off Lake Erie. North winds push rain and wet snow against doors along the shore, salted streets send brine up the driveway, and damp air works its way into hinges, rollers and the cable anchor plates at the bottom of the door.

Rust on those brackets is easy to miss until a cable lets go and the door hangs crooked. A yearly tune-up visit catches it early: we check the cables, oil the moving parts, test the balance and replace a split bottom seal before winter gets into the garage.

Roses, a Lighthouse and the Palace

The city runs 51 parks covering 583 acres. Among them is Lakeview Park, opened in 1917 and split in two by West Erie Avenue: the beach side is run by Lorain County Metro Parks and the south side by the city. Its rose garden, dedicated in 1932, holds 2,500 roses in 48 beds laid out as a wheel with eight spokes, the Rotary emblem. Families have long posed at the park's woven-concrete Easter basket each spring, and since 2024 eagles have nested at Lakeview Park South.

Out on the water, the Lorain West Breakwater Light went up in 1917, the fourth lighthouse built for the Black River port. It was retired in 1965 and marked for demolition, and residents organized to save it; it has been on the National Register since 1978. Downtown, the Lorain Palace Theatre opened in 1928 with the first talking picture shown in Ohio and still runs as a civic center, Wurlitzer organ included.

Lorain City Schools run ten elementary schools, three middle schools and Lorain High School, and the Lorain Public Library System serves the city. Lorain-born Toni Morrison set her first novel, The Bluest Eye, here.

Lorain, Area by Area

No interstate crosses the city. It is laid out along a handful of state routes and split by the Black River, so each part of town has its own feel.

Downtown and Broadway

State Route 57 starts at Erie Avenue and runs south along Broadway, the old main street pictured on postcards from 1908. The Palace Theatre anchors this stretch. If your garage is out behind an older house on one of the side streets, it may still have its original door and springs.

West Erie Avenue and the Lakefront

US 6 follows Erie Avenue along the shoreline from the Sheffield Lake line to Vermilion. On the west side it passes Lakeview Park, the beach and the rose garden, and homes close to the water get the lake wind first.

The East Side, Across the River

Three bridges cross the Black River in the harbor. The Charles Berry Bridge on Erie Avenue and the Lofton Henderson Memorial Bridge on 21st Street both opened on October 12, 1940, and were nicknamed the Twin Bridges. The Charles Berry is a double-leaf bascule span, the largest of its kind in the world when it was built, and it still opens about 700 times a year. It honors Lorain native Charles J. Berry, a Marine who received the Medal of Honor for Iwo Jima. The third crossing, the old 11th Street rail bridge, is a vertical lift.

South Lorain

At 28th Street, Route 57 turns east and crosses South Lorain along the southern edge of the steel mill before heading down Grove Avenue toward Elyria. If your garage backs onto one of the older streets near the mill, expect us to check the framing as closely as the door.

Leavitt Road and Middle Ridge

State Route 58 begins at Erie Avenue and North Leavitt Road and heads south toward Amherst, and State Route 2 touches the city only at its Broadway and Middle Ridge Road interchange, exit 166.

Lorain Questions

We plan around it. Call any time and a real human answers, never AI. We offer same-day service on most calls, often within 1 hour, and we call you when we’re on the way. We call you when we’re on the way.

Usually, yes. After checking the header and jambs, we size the door to the opening you actually have. If the framing needs work first, we tell you before anything is ordered.

Rust weakens cables and their anchor points, and a failure can drop one side of the door. Have us look at them soon, and keep people and cars clear of the door until then.
