Settlers from New England began arriving around 1833, drawn by the water power. At their peak the falls ran nine different mills, and by the middle of the nineteenth century the riverbanks held a gristmill built in 1836, an axe factory, a foundry, flour, woolen and saw mills, paper mills and a woodenware factory. Profits from that work built the homes that grew into the village.
Chagrin Falls was laid out in 1837 and incorporated in 1844 from parts of three townships in two counties. The village reached 1,931 people by 1910, 3,085 by 1950 and 4,848 by 1970. Today the village skews older. Its 2020 median age was 49.1; close to a quarter of its people (23.4%) had turned 65, a fifth (20.7%) were children, 37.2% of its households held a single resident, and owner-occupied houses almost never sat empty (a 1.2% vacancy rate).
That long history means a mix of garages: you'll find small detached ones behind older houses and attached ones on later streets. Old openings are often an odd size, so we measure every one before ordering a door.
The falls drop about 20 feet over a crest about 60 feet wide, and the Chagrin River was named a state scenic river in 1979. Water that close means damp air, especially in the low streets near the river, and damp air rusts springs and cable ends and swells wooden doors.
