Salt Licks, Council Rock and a County of 1846
Around the year 1600 the land was probably divided between two peoples, the Erie to the east and the Whittlesey culture to the west. The Erie were an Iroquoian people who likely arrived between 1100 and 1300 AD; the Whittlesey were probably Algonquian but lived in longhouses. After the Beaver Wars, the Seneca, Lenape, Shawnee and Wyandot shared the resources of the Mahoning Valley. Council Rock, where the Shawnee and Lenape gathered for celebrations, ceremonies and meetings, once sat in the center of Youngstown; it was moved long ago and now rests in Lincoln Park. The North Benton burial mound, attributed to the Hopewell culture, was removed by archaeologists.
A family of Huguenot refugees came to the area in the early 1800s. Until 1846 the land was part of Trumbull and Columbiana counties; when the counties were redrawn, Mahoning County was established on March 1, 1846, as Ohio's 83rd county. It takes its name from the Mahoning River, and in the 1900s Youngstown became a hub of the American steel industry.
The Mahoning River and Its Lakes
Water covers 3.2% of the county. The Mahoning River drops from 1,296 feet near its headwaters at Winona to 761 feet near Mahoningtown, Pennsylvania, where it joins the Shenango River to form the Beaver River, part of the Ohio River basin. Its name comes from the Lenape mahonink, meaning "at the licks," after the salt licks once found here. Lake Milton State Park covers 1,700 acres around a lake formed by a dam and offers boating, swimming, fishing, archery, disc golf and bird watching, with snowmobiling, cross-country skiing and ice fishing in winter.
Valley winters bring snow and plenty of road salt. Salt and moisture rust springs, cables and hinges, and cold snaps finish off springs that are near the end of their life. A fall tune-up helps a door get through the winter.

Interstate 76, the Ohio Turnpike, Interstate 80 and Interstate 680 all serve the county.
U.S. and State Routes
U.S. Routes 62, 224 and 422 cross the county, along with state routes including 7, 11, 14, 45, 46, 164, 165, 170, 193, 289, 446 and 534.
Youngstown State University
Founded in 1908, YSU is a public university in Youngstown and the easternmost member of the University System of Ohio. It has six undergraduate colleges and a graduate college, over 100 undergraduate and 50 graduate degree programs, more than 11,000 students and a satellite campus in Steubenville, and its teams are the Penguins.
Cities and Villages
Besides Youngstown, Struthers and Canfield, the county includes the city of Campbell and parts of Alliance, Columbiana and Salem, plus the villages of Beloit, Craig Beach, Lowellville, New Middletown, Poland and Sebring. Youngstown itself extends partly beyond the county line. The fourteen townships are Austintown, Beaver, Berlin, Boardman, Canfield, Coitsville, Ellsworth, Goshen, Green, Jackson, Milton, Poland, Smith and Springfield.
