Garage Door Sensor & Remote Repair

Door reverses, light blinks, remote stopped working?

Mr. Pro, the Proactive Garage Door Repair mascot

The safety sensors near the floor stop the door from closing on a person, pet or car. When they're dirty, out of line or damaged, the door refuses to close. Proactive Garage Door Repair repairs and replaces sensors, remotes and keypads across Brunswick, Medina County and Northeast Ohio, usually the same day. The estimate is free, and you get the exact price before any work starts.

Signs of a Sensor Problem

The most common reason a door won't close

  • The door starts closing, then goes back up.
  • The opener light blinks when you try to close the door.
  • The door only closes if you hold the wall button down.
  • One sensor light is off or flickering.

Quick check: wipe the sensor lenses with a soft cloth and make sure nothing blocks the beam. If the door still won't close, call us.

Remotes, Keypads and Wall Buttons

We program new remotes and keypads, replace worn wall buttons, and fix remotes that only work up close. If your remote stopped working after an opener change, we'll match and program compatible remotes on the spot.

Related Repairs We Handle

If the sensors aren't the cause, we check the opener and the door itself:

Garage door spring repair by Proactive Garage Door Repair

Garage Door Spring Repair

A broken torsion or extension spring leaves the door too heavy to lift safely and is the most common garage door failure in Northeast Ohio winters. Because a spring under tension is dangerous to handle, this is a job for a trained technician. We cover it in full on our dedicated page.

Garage Door Opener Repair

Openers are built to last 10 to 15 years, but they slow down, get noisy, or stop responding when they wear or lose alignment. We diagnose and repair LiftMaster, Chamberlain, and Genie openers, and handle new opener installation on our

opener page.

Garage door lift cable and cable drum, Proactive Garage Door Repair job

Broken Cable Repair

Garage door cables carry the full weight of the door alongside the springs, so a frayed or snapped cable makes the door unsafe to operate. Proactive replaces worn lift and retaining cables for residential and commercial doors, inspects the drums and pulleys for related wear, and restores safe, balanced operation. Our technicians handle this repair every day.

Garage door track, rollers and hinges, Proactive Garage Door Repair job

Garage Door Roller Repair

Worn rollers make a door move roughly, run loud, and put extra strain on the opener and tracks. We replace damaged rollers with quiet nylon rollers for smoother, quieter operation and check the surrounding hardware while we are there. Staying ahead of roller wear protects the rest of the door and helps you avoid a larger repair later. If a roller has already failed, we can usually replace it the same day.

Remote and Sensor Repair

When a door will not respond or reverses for no reason, the cause is often the remote, the receiver, or a misaligned safety sensor rather than the door itself. Proactive diagnoses remote and sensor faults, realigns and tests the photo-eye sensors, and reprograms remotes and keypads so your door opens reliably and stops safely on an obstruction.

Garage door emergency?

Excellent service and highly recommended! I called them initially for routine garage door maintenance, but during the inspection, they identified that the spring was broken. I had been experiencing issues in the past with the garage door not opening or closing properly, and they were able to identify the underlying problem quickly. They recommended replacing the spring with higher-quality rods and drums, and I’m very happy with the result. I could immediately feel the difference after the repair—the garage door feels much stronger, smoother, and more secure than before. The team was professional, knowledgeable, and took the time to explain what needed to be done and why. I really appreciate their honest recommendation and quality of work. Great experience from start to finish. I would definitely recommend them to anyone needing garage door repair or maintenance!

Frequently Asked Questions

The two sensors sit a few inches above the floor on each side of the door and must point straight at each other. Wipe both lenses, then loosen the wing nut on one sensor, move it slowly until its light stays on without blinking, and tighten it. If the light still blinks or the door still won’t close, call us at (440) 876-4444.

Often, yes. Most sensor problems come from a dirty lens, a bumped bracket or low sun shining straight in, and cleaning and realigning are safe to do yourself. If a wire is damaged or a sensor has failed, we can replace it. Never tape over or bypass the sensors.

One sensor sends an invisible infrared beam across the opening and the other one receives it. If anything breaks the beam while the door is closing, the opener stops and sends the door back up. Openers made since the early 1990s are required to have them.

A weak battery is the most common reason. Some LED bulbs in the opener and a damaged or tucked-up antenna wire on the motor unit can also cut the range. Try a new battery first, and if that doesn’t help, we can test the remote and the opener.

Most often the safety sensors are dirty, out of line, or blocked. Wipe them and check that both lights are steady. If that doesn’t help, call us.

On most LiftMaster and Chamberlain openers, the sending sensor shows a steady yellow (amber) light and the receiving sensor shows a steady green light. That’s normal. If the green light is off, dim or flickering, the sensors can’t see each other: something is in the way, a lens is dirty, the bracket got bumped, or a wire is damaged. Wipe both lenses, move anything blocking the path, and gently line the sensors up until both lights are steady. Still not working? Call (440) 876-4444 for same-day service on most calls, often within 1 hour. We call you when we’re on the way.

On many openers, the light blinks (and the door goes back up) when the safety sensors are blocked or out of line. On some Genie models the sensor light itself blinks red for the same reason. Check that nothing is between the sensors, clean the lenses, and make sure both sensor lights are steady. If the blinking continues, the sensor, its wiring or the opener’s logic board may need repair. Call (440) 876-4444 and we’ll fix it, usually in one visit.

Yes. Low morning or evening sun shining straight into a sensor can make the door reverse. Repositioning the sensor usually fixes it.

It depends on the part and your door: a small non-insulated door needs lighter, cheaper parts than a heavy insulated or wood door. We inspect for free and give you the full installed price before any work starts. Weekends cost the same as weekdays.

Yes. We carry remotes and keypads for most opener brands and program them on the spot.

No. The sensors are a required safety feature that stops the door from closing on people, pets and cars.

We are an authorized dealer for Clopay, Amarr (Amarr by Andersen) and Wayne Dalton garage doors, and for Genie, LiftMaster and Chamberlain openers. We also repair Craftsman openers and service C.H.I. doors and most other brands.

Yes. We accept all types of payment, including Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express. Financing is available through Wisetack for new doors, openers and larger repairs, and we work with all insurance companies. Checking if you qualify is a soft credit check, so it won’t affect your credit score. You get a decision in seconds. All financing is subject to credit approval. If a car or a storm damaged your door, we can give you a written estimate and photos for your claim.
