Your garage door stopped working and you're not sure why. This guide shows the problems our technicians see every day across Brunswick, Medina, Cleveland, Akron and Northeast Ohio. Match what you see to a picture, check whether the door is safe to use, and see what to do next. Some problems are simple checks you can do yourself. Anything with springs or cables is not: those parts are under high tension, so leave them to a technician. The estimate is free, and you get the exact price before any work starts.

The most common garage door problems

Find the picture that looks like your door. Each one explains what it is, whether it's safe to use, and what to do.

A gap in the spring above the door

Don't use the door
Broken garage door torsion spring with a gap between the two coils
A broken torsion spring: see the gap in the coils.

What you see: You heard a loud bang from the garage. Now the door won't open, or it opens a few inches and stops, and it feels very heavy. On the bar above the door there's a gap in the spring.

What it is: A broken torsion spring. The springs lift the door's weight; the opener only guides it. Springs wear out after a set number of cycles and often snap on a cold morning.

Is it safe to use? Don't use the door or the opener, and don't try to lift it. Without the spring, the full weight of the door is loose.

What to do: Leave the door closed if you can, keep cars and kids away, and call us. Spring repair needs special tools and training.

A cable hanging loose or unwound from the drum

Don't use the door
Garage door lift cable and cable drum, Proactive Garage Door Repair job
A lift cable that came off its drum.

What you see: A steel cable is hanging at the side of the door, or it's wrapped loosely around the drum at the top corner. The door may hang crooked, lower on one side.

What it is: A loose, frayed or snapped lift cable. It often happens together with a broken spring, or when the door hit something on the way down.

Is it safe to use? Don't use the door. A crooked door with a loose cable can fall or jam further.

What to do: Unplug the opener and call us. Cables are under high tension from the springs.

Garage door cable repair →

The door is crooked or the rollers left the track

Don't use the door
Garage door track, rollers and hinges, Proactive Garage Door Repair job
Checking a garage door track. An off-track door has rollers outside this rail.

What you see: The door is tilted, stuck halfway, or there's a big gap on one side. Some rollers (the small wheels) are outside the metal track.

What it is: An off-track door. Common causes are a car bumping the door, a broken cable, a bent track, or worn rollers.

Is it safe to use? Don't use the opener. Forcing an off-track door can bend the panels and drop the door.

What to do: Unplug the opener, keep people away from the door, and call us.

Off-track garage door repair →

A long spring on the side has stretched or snapped

Don't use the door

What you see: On older doors, long springs run along the tracks on each side, above the door. One is stretched out, snapped, or hanging down.

What it is: A broken extension spring. On these doors, a safety cable must run through each spring so a broken spring can't fly across the garage.

Is it safe to use? Don't use the door. If there's no safety cable in the spring, stay clear of it.

What to do: Call us. We replace extension springs in pairs and add safety cables if they're missing.

Garage door spring repair →

The door goes down, then back up

Usually safe to use

What you see: The door starts to close, then reverses. Or it only closes while you hold the wall button. The opener light may blink, and a light on one of the small sensors near the floor is off or flickering.

What it is: The safety sensors can't see each other. Usually they're dirty, out of line, or something is in the way. Sometimes a wire or the sensor itself is damaged.

Is it safe to use? The door is safe to use while you check. The sensors are doing their job.

What to do: Clean both lenses, remove anything in the door's path, and make sure both sensors point at each other. If the light still won't stay on, call us.

Garage door sensor repair →

The opener hums or runs, but the door doesn't move

Don't use the door
Garage door track, rollers and hinges, Proactive Garage Door Repair job, photo 2
The red emergency release cord on the opener.

What you see: You press the button and hear the motor hum or run, or it clicks, but the door stays where it is.

What it is: Common causes: a broken spring (the opener can't lift the door alone), a stripped gear inside the opener, the door's manual lock is engaged, or the opener was disconnected by the red release cord.

Is it safe to use? Stop pressing the button. Running the opener against a stuck door burns out the motor.

What to do: Look for a gap in the spring above the door first. If the spring is broken, don't pull the red cord: the door may drop. Call us.

Garage door opener repair →

A dented, bent or cracked section

Usually safe to use

What you see: One section of the door is dented, creased, cracked or pushed in, often after a car or snowblower hit it.

What it is: A damaged panel. A bad bend can make the door rub, bind or jump its track.

Is it safe to use? If the door still opens and closes smoothly, it's usually safe to use. If it's crooked or stuck, stop using it.

What to do: Call us for a free estimate. We'll tell you honestly whether a matching section is still made or whether a new door makes more sense. We work with all insurance companies.

Garage door panel replacement →

Light, water or leaves under the door

Usually safe to use
Inside view of a garage door after a Proactive Garage Door Repair visit
The rubber seals on a garage door.

What you see: You see daylight under the closed door, water comes in when it rains, or leaves and mice get in. The rubber strip at the bottom is cracked, flat or torn.

What it is: A worn bottom seal or weatherstripping. In Ohio winters the rubber also freezes to the ground and tears.

Is it safe to use? Safe to use. It lets in cold, water and pests, but it isn't dangerous.

What to do: Call us to replace the bottom seal and the side and top weatherstripping, usually in one visit.

Bottom seal and weatherstripping →

Grinding, squeaking or shaking

Usually safe to use

What you see: The door is much louder than it used to be. It grinds, squeaks, pops or shakes as it moves.

What it is: Usually worn rollers, dry or loose hinges, or springs that are out of balance. Noise is often an early warning of a bigger repair.

Is it safe to use? Usually safe for now, but have it checked soon.

What to do: A tune-up with new quiet nylon rollers and balanced springs often fixes it. Our tune-up is $49 per door.

Roller, hinge and track replacement →

Not sure what you're looking at? Take a photo of the door and the parts above it, and describe what you see when you call. Call (440) 876-4444 for same-day service on most calls, often within 1 hour. We call you when we're on the way.

Safety First: What Not to Do

  • Don't touch, loosen or adjust the springs, the cables or the brackets at the bottom corners of the door.
  • Don't keep pressing the opener button when the door won't move. It can burn out the motor or pull the door off its track.
  • Don't pull the red release cord if a spring is broken. The door could drop.
  • Don't walk or drive under a door that's crooked, stuck halfway or moving unevenly.
  • Do unplug the opener, keep children and pets away, and call (440) 876-4444. 24/7, a real human answers. No AI. Technicians nearby, often at your door within 1 hour.

Garage door spring replacement job by Proactive Garage Door Repair

Garage Door Spring Repair

A broken torsion or extension spring leaves the door too heavy to lift safely and is the most common garage door failure in Northeast Ohio winters. Because a spring under tension is dangerous to handle, this is a job for a trained technician. We cover it in full on our dedicated page.

Garage Door Opener Repair

Openers are built to last 10 to 15 years, but they slow down, get noisy, or stop responding when they wear or lose alignment. We diagnose and repair LiftMaster, Chamberlain, and Genie openers, and handle new opener installation on our

opener page.

Garage door lift cable and cable drum, Proactive Garage Door Repair job

Broken Cable Repair

Garage door cables carry the full weight of the door alongside the springs, so a frayed or snapped cable makes the door unsafe to operate. Proactive replaces worn lift and retaining cables for residential and commercial doors, inspects the drums and pulleys for related wear, and restores safe, balanced operation. Our technicians handle this repair every day.

Garage Door Roller Repair

Worn rollers make a door move roughly, run loud, and put extra strain on the opener and tracks. We replace damaged rollers with quiet nylon rollers for smoother, quieter operation and check the surrounding hardware while we are there. Staying ahead of roller wear protects the rest of the door and helps you avoid a larger repair later. If a roller has already failed, we can usually replace it the same day.

Garage door wall control or keypad, Proactive Garage Door Repair job

Remote and Sensor Repair

When a door will not respond or reverses for no reason, the cause is often the remote, the receiver, or a misaligned safety sensor rather than the door itself. Proactive diagnoses remote and sensor faults, realigns and tests the photo-eye sensors, and reprograms remotes and keypads so your door opens reliably and stops safely on an obstruction. Want to try it yourself first? See our guide to program or reset your opener and keypad.

Garage door emergency?

A door stuck open, a spring that snapped under tension, or an entrance you cannot secure needs a fast response. Proactive Garage Door Repair is available 24/7 across Brunswick and Northeast Ohio, and a real human answers, never AI.

Before You Call: 3 Quick Checks

  • Look above the door: is there a gap in the spring on the bar? If yes, stop and call.
  • Look near the floor: are both safety sensors lit and clear of anything in the way?
  • Check the power: is the opener plugged in, and did a breaker or GFCI outlet trip?

A photo of the door and the parts above it helps you describe the problem when you call.

Excellent service and highly recommended! I called them initially for routine garage door maintenance, but during the inspection, they identified that the spring was broken. I had been experiencing issues in the past with the garage door not opening or closing properly, and they were able to identify the underlying problem quickly. They recommended replacing the spring with higher-quality rods and drums, and I’m very happy with the result. I could immediately feel the difference after the repair—the garage door feels much stronger, smoother, and more secure than before. The team was professional, knowledgeable, and took the time to explain what needed to be done and why. I really appreciate their honest recommendation and quality of work. Great experience from start to finish. I would definitely recommend them to anyone needing garage door repair or maintenance!

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Text a photo or short video to our customer support line at (440) 876-4444. You can also call or chat there. We’ll tell you what we see.

Some LED bulbs give off radio noise that blocks the remote signal. Try the old bulb or a bulb made for garage door openers.

A broken spring, misaligned sensors or worn opener parts are the usual causes. Don’t force it. Call us and we’ll find the cause.

A door that suddenly drops or slams shut usually has a broken or worn spring, or a cable that slipped. The springs carry the weight of the door, so when one fails the door comes down too hard. Stop using it and call us at (440) 876-4444, and we will check the springs and cables.

Yes, it can. If a spring or a cable breaks, the door loses what holds up its weight and can drop fast. Keep people, pets and cars out from under a door that is crooked, banged loudly or feels heavy, and call us.

No. The springs hold the door’s weight, which can be a few hundred pounds. With a broken spring the door can drop suddenly, and the opener can be damaged trying to lift it. Leave the door closed and call (440) 876-4444. 24/7, a real human answers. No AI. Technicians nearby, often at your door within 1 hour. We call you when we’re on the way.

We don’t recommend it. Springs are wound under very high tension, and they cause serious injuries every year when people try it without the right tools and training. A technician replaces them safely, balances the door and tests it.

It depends on the part and your door: a small non-insulated door needs lighter, cheaper parts than a heavy insulated or wood door. We inspect for free and give you the full installed price before any work starts. Weekends cost the same as weekdays.

A loud bang from the garage, often in the morning or in cold weather, is usually a torsion spring snapping. Look at the bar above the door for a gap in the spring, and don’t use the door until it’s fixed.

A crooked door usually has a loose or broken cable, a broken spring on one side, or rollers that came out of the track. Stop using it, unplug the opener and call us. Forcing it can bend the panels.

Usually the safety sensors near the floor can’t see each other. Clean the lenses, remove anything in the way, and line them up so both lights stay on. If the door also reverses when it touches the floor, the opener’s force or travel settings may need adjusting.

The most common causes are a broken spring, a stripped gear in the opener, a manual lock that’s engaged, or an opener that was disconnected with the red release cord. Check the spring first. If it’s broken, don’t pull the release cord, because the door could drop.

If the springs look fine, pull the red emergency release cord with the door fully closed, then lift the door by hand. If the door feels very heavy or a spring is broken, stop and call us instead.

Worn metal rollers, dry hinges and springs out of balance are the usual causes. A tune-up with quiet nylon rollers and lubrication often makes the door much quieter.

Torsion springs sit on a bar right above the closed door. Extension springs are long springs that run along the tracks on each side, above the door. Both are under high tension, so look but don’t touch.

A small dent is mostly cosmetic. A deep bend or crack can make the door bind or jump its track. We can replace the section when a matching one is still made, and we work with all insurance companies if a car or storm caused it.

We are an authorized dealer for Clopay, Amarr (Amarr by Andersen) and Wayne Dalton garage doors, and for Genie, LiftMaster and Chamberlain openers. We also repair Craftsman openers and service C.H.I. doors and most other brands.
