A Mill Village That Changed Names Twice

The first settlers, around 40 people including Francis Kelsey and William Stow, came in 1809. Kelsey built a sawmill on the south side of the river, a gristmill went up on the north side, and the place was called Kelsey's Mills. After a wooden dam was built in 1817 to power both mills, the name changed to Florence. Around 1836 William and Edmund Munroe arrived from Boston, bought the mills and roughly 250 acres, and laid out a new village they named Munroe Falls. It was incorporated on October 26, 1838.

The Munroes hoped to build a silk industry on mulberry trees and silkworms. The trees thrived; the worms did not. The Pennsylvania and Ohio Canal opened through town in 1840, and railroad tracks were later laid in its old bed. Growth came much later: 933 people in 1950, 1,828 in 1960 and 3,794 by 1970. City hall is the old 1885 schoolhouse, and Munroe Falls became a city in 1991.

If your house dates from that 1960s growth spurt, its garage has probably seen several springs come and go, and the track brackets deserve a look along with them.

Beside a Free-Flowing River

Oxygen levels in the Cuyahoga were too low, mostly because of the stagnant pool behind the Munroe Falls dam, which dated to 1903. Work that began in August 2005 and finished in October 2006 removed the dam entirely after crews found a natural ledge underneath it, and the river through the city was cleaned up and restored.

Metro Parks, Schools and the Bike & Hike

Summit Metro Parks has two parks in the city: Munroe Falls Metro Park, with its swimming lake, and Tallmadge Meadows. The city runs Brust Park and Guise Park, and the Bike & Hike Trail passes through Brust Park. Most students attend the Stow-Munroe Falls City School District, whose Riverview Elementary and Kimpton Middle School are in Munroe Falls; a small part of the city belongs to the Tallmadge district.

William Stow's log house stood at what is now the northwest corner of State Route 91 and Munroe Falls Avenue.
