Lewisville, the Railroad and a City in 1960

Henry Lautzenheiser, who came from Germany, and Frederick Fainot, a French Huguenot, formally settled the town on October 8, 1834. It was named for Lautzenheiser's son Lewis and first spelled Lewisville. When the post office opened in 1837, with Sam Petree as postmaster, Ohio already had a Lewisville, so the spelling became Louisville.

In its early days the town competed with nearby Harrisburg, a stagecoach stop between Canton, Alliance, Cleveland and Pittsburgh. Then the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne and Chicago Railway was laid through Louisville in 1852, and Louisville pulled ahead while Harrisburg struggled to haul its main product, wheat, by barge. It became a village on April 1, 1872. Telephone toll lines arrived in the early 1880s, twelve oil street lamps were lit downtown for Christmas 1884, a public water system followed in 1894 and sewers in 1910, and Main Street became the first fully paved road in 1914. In 1960 residents voted to become a city.

For a few years the town even had a college. The Reverend Louis Hoffer founded Saint Louis College across the street from St. Louis Church, and it opened in 1866 under the Diocese of Cleveland before the Congregation of St. Basil of Toronto took over the next year. It closed in 1873, short of money and hard for students to reach. The old red brick building went on to serve as an orphanage and later a home for the elderly before it was razed in 1975.

That long growth left a mix of older houses and postwar and newer homes, so we see everything from single doors on detached garages to attached two-car doors. We repair both and can fit a new door to an older, odd-sized opening.
