Poland is a village in eastern Mahoning County, a suburb of Youngstown with 2,463 residents at the 2020 census living in 1,090 households. The 2020 count found 1,129 housing units. Ten years earlier, 59.8% of households were married couples and the median age was 46.3, so this is a village of long-settled homeowners.
Poland Township, which has no namesake anywhere else in Ohio, counted 14,664 people around the village in 2020. Its older houses have garages that need patient work and the right parts, and when yours sags, sticks or stops cold, we offer same-day service on most calls, often within 1 hour.
If the old door is past saving, a steel carriage-house door gives a century-old Poland house the look of wood without the scraping and painting. On a postwar two-car garage an insulated panel door is the better fit. Poland Township was surveyed in 1796 as township 1, range 1 of the Connecticut Western Reserve, and Turhand Kirtland, one of the surveyors in Moses Cleaveland's party, is considered to have founded the village in 1798. Early settlers came mainly from Connecticut and Pennsylvania, and in 1802 Jonathan Fowler, whose family was the first to settle in the village, built a grist mill on Yellow Creek. The village may be named for the country of Poland, in gratitude for its help in the Revolutionary War, and it was incorporated in 1866.
The South Main Street Historic District marks a neighborhood of Poland's oldest buildings. Growth came later: the village had 968 people in 1930 and 1,652 in 1950, then 2,766 by 1960 and 3,097 in 1970. That gives Poland a mix of old houses with carriage-house style or detached garages and postwar homes with attached two-car doors, and we work on both.
Old shade trees and the Yellow Creek valley keep Poland cool and damp, and that moisture gets into everything in a garage: spring coils pit, hinge pins seize and the bottom rail of a wood door soaks up water and swells. In January, meltwater under the door turns to a ridge of ice by morning.
Pry the seal free with a putty knife before pressing the wall button. Once a year, ideally in October, let us oil, tighten and rebalance the door so the springs are not fighting rust and ice at the same time.
Poland Seminary began as a private secondary school, Poland Academy, and became a liberal arts college founded in 1849. Its main building is now part of Poland Middle School on College Street, and its dormitory is part of the Poland Public Library on Main Street. Journalist Ida Tarbell taught there, and future president William McKinley studied there.
Today the Poland Local School District has an elementary, a middle school and Poland Seminary High School, and the village library is a branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County. Engineer and inventor Julian Kennedy, mathematician Ralph Palmer Agnew, science fiction writer Vonda N. McIntyre and poet Kate Brownlee Sherwood all came from the village.

Usually yes. We measure the opening and headroom, then order a door sized to it; a carriage-house style steel door keeps the old look.
