A Suburb That Filled In Fast

Rocky River was still a small place in 1920, with 1,861 people. Then the building started: 5,632 residents by 1930, 11,237 by 1950, 18,907 by 1960 and 22,958 by 1970. So a large share of the city's homes went up between the 1920s and the 1960s, and there were 10,604 housing units by 2020.

The River Valley and the Lake

The river runs through a deep valley here, with steep shale cliffs and eight high-level bridges crossing the main stem. Where it empties into Lake Erie, the Army Corps of Engineers dredges the navigation channel and maintains the breakwater, and a harbor sits at the river's mouth. The city's elevation is about 692 feet.

Being wedged between a lake and a river valley means damp air, wind and plenty of lake-effect weather. That moisture corrodes garage door springs and cables and makes wood doors swell. At the lake, U.S. Route 6 crosses the river mouth on the Clifton Park-West Lake Bridge.

Rocky River High School, where the teams are the Pirates, stands at the corner of Wagar and Detroit. In October 1764, a British expedition caught by a storm on Lake Erie came ashore at what is now Bradstreet's Landing Park. Every Rocky River address shares ZIP code 44116.
