Right on Lake Erie's south shore, just west of Cleveland, is Lakewood, and its nickname says a lot: the City of Homes. The city was established in 1889 as one of Cleveland's streetcar suburbs. At the 2020 census it had 50,942 residents, making it the third-largest city in Cuyahoga County, behind Cleveland and Parma. The city had 28,802 housing units and 26,441 households that year.

Downtown Lakewood, centered at Detroit Avenue and Warren Road, is lined with office buildings and shops, and there are factories along the southeastern edge of the city near Birdtown. From Rockport Township to the City of Homes

The land that became Lakewood was part of Rockport Township, organized on February 24, 1819, on the shore of Lake Erie, and in its early years farms covered the township. Lakewood was incorporated as a village on August 31, 1889. Old houses are a point of pride here: in the “Make Lakewood Beautiful” program, residents compete to make their homes look the way they were first designed, several homeowners are honored each year, and the city offers tours of its most famous homes in spring, summer and fall.

Then the houses came fast. The population went from 3,355 in 1900 to 15,181 in 1910, 41,732 in 1920 and 70,509 in 1930. Lakewood's schools had their turn later: the city rebuilt or renovated its high school, two middle schools and seven elementary schools in a program finished in 2017, its first major school building program since 1920.

Much of Lakewood was built in those streetcar decades, for families who rode to work. If your house is from that boom, the garage is likely a small detached building at the back of a narrow lot, with a single door and tight clearance on each side. A garage like that needs a door and springs sized to its real opening, not to a catalog size.

Life on the Lake

Lake Erie is Lakewood's northern border, and it shapes the weather. Wind comes straight off the water, winters are damp and gray, and snow can pile up fast. At about 702 feet above sea level, the city sits low and close to the lake.

Damp air and road salt are hard on garage hardware. Springs and cables rust, hinges stiffen and the rubber seal at the bottom of the door cracks. On a detached garage with no heat, all of that happens faster. A yearly tune-up catches rust before it turns into a snapped cable.

Getting Around Lakewood

Lakewood borders Lake Erie to the north, the Cleveland neighborhoods of Edgewater and Cudell to the east, and Jefferson and Kamm's Corners to the south. To the west, across the Rocky River valley, is Rocky River. Interstate 90 runs along the south side of the city, with ramps at West 117th Street, Bunts Road, Warren Road and McKinley Road. The main east-west streets are Detroit Avenue, Clifton Boulevard and Madison Avenue. The whole city uses ZIP code 44107.

Lakewood, Area by Area

Birdtown

In the southeast corner, Birdtown is an eight-street district built in the 1890s for workers at a nearby carbon factory. Most of its streets are named for birds, such as Robin, Plover, Lark and Thrush. A land company helped workers buy more than 400 lots with small down payments, and many families built their homes themselves, then added onto them over the years. By 1910 nearly 2,200 people lived there. Birdtown was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2006, and Harrison Elementary sits in the middle of it. With owner-built houses and later additions, garage openings here come in every size, so we always measure.

Clifton Park and the West End

Clifton Park, in the northwest corner, is Lakewood's wealthiest neighborhood, with about 250 homes, many of them large Victorians from the late 1800s. Its winding streets break from the city's grid, and it runs from Sloane Avenue to the lake and from Webb Road to the Rocky River. The northern part was listed on the National Register in 1974 and the southern part in 2021. Just south, the West End lines the Rocky River Reservation. If your big old home has an oversized or custom door, its springs have to match that door's real weight.

Clifton Boulevard

RTA's Clifton line, routes 55, 55B and 55C, runs east and west along Clifton Boulevard, to Cleveland State University downtown in one direction and to North Olmsted, Bay Village and Westlake in the other. If your building has shared garages out back, remember that a door several neighbors use every day wears out springs and rollers faster than a single-family door.

Downtown and Detroit Avenue

Downtown Lakewood runs along Detroit Avenue from Bunts Avenue to Arthur Avenue, and joined the national Main Street program in 2005. The Lakewood Public Library's main branch is here, and its 2008 expansion brought it to 93,000 square feet. RTA routes 26 and 26A serve Detroit Avenue.

Madison Avenue and the Lakefront

The library's Madison Avenue branch opened in 1929 and reopened in March 2022 after a renovation and expansion, and RTA Route 25 serves Madison Avenue. On the shore, Lakewood Park is one of the largest lakefront parks in Ohio; its Solstice Steps, opened in 2015, line up with the sunset on the summer solstice.
