Split between Summit and Portage counties, the village of Mogadore is an Akron suburb of 3,811 people as of the 2020 census. Its 1,551 households include many families: 30.7% have children under 18 at home, and half (50.0%) are married couples.

A Revolutionary War Veteran's Settlement

Mogadore is in the part of Ohio known as the Connecticut Western Reserve. Ariel Bradley, a veteran of the Revolutionary War, first settled here in 1807, and the place went by Bradleyville until 1825. The new name comes from the city of Essaouira, Morocco, known historically as Mogador. It may have been inspired by Sufferings in Africa, the memoir of a Connecticut sea captain who was captured in North Africa and taken to Mogador.

The village grew in bursts. The census counted 438 residents in 1910, 1,502 by 1930, 1,818 in 1950 and then 3,851 in 1960, more than double in a single decade, reaching 4,825 in 1970. There were 1,602 housing units at the 2020 count, and only 3.2% stood vacant. For a house built in that decade, the door you have now may not be the first one, and the tracks and brackets behind it can be older than the door itself.

Wind Along the County Line

Mogadore stands around 1,125 feet above sea level, right on the Summit-Portage line. Winter wind and snow reach driveways here with little to slow them down, and cold mornings are exactly when a worn spring decides to break.
