What We Do in Richland County
Richland County is in north-central Ohio, and it forms the Mansfield metropolitan area, one of the six metropolitan areas that make up Northeast Ohio. Mansfield is the county seat and largest city, and the 2020 census counted 124,936 people. The county is also part of the Mansfield-Ashland-Bucyrus combined statistical area.

Forest, Farms and a Famous Farm
Richland dates from 1808, though its government was not organized until 1813, and the name refers to the fertile soil found there. At first it covered a larger area, most of it forest, and settlers cleared the land for farming as the population grew. When Ashland County was formed on February 24, 1846, most of its land came from townships taken from eastern Richland County, some whole, such as Green Township, and some in part, such as Clear Creek, Milton and Mifflin.
The county's best-known farm is Malabar Farm, now a state park near Lucas, next to Mohican State Park. Louis Bromfield, a Pulitzer Prize-winning author who grew up in Pleasant Valley, built it in 1939 and lived there until his death in 1956. He bought a farm from Clement Herring in December 1938, added neighboring farms in 1940 and 1941, and paid for the place with money from his 1937 bestseller The Rains Came, giving it an Indian name because, as he put it, India made it possible. Architect Louis Lamoreux of Mansfield helped him design a 19-room Greek Revival house, and in all Bromfield owned 580.6 acres.
Headwaters, Reservoirs and Rolling Hills
Water covers only 1.0% of Richland County, but several rivers start here. Clear Fork Reservoir, on the Clear Fork at the Morrow County line County, was designed and built in 1949 to be Mansfield's main source of drinking water. Farther east, in Ashland County, the Clear Fork runs through a narrow gorge in Mohican State Park, then meets the Black Fork, and together they become the Mohican River. Pleasant Hill Lake, held back by a dam in Ashland County, reaches back into Richland. In the north, the West Branch of the Huron River rises in Blooming Grove Township near Gilger and Noble roads and flows through Plymouth on its way toward Lake Erie.
Hilly roads and open farmland mean wind, drifting snow and plenty of road salt in winter. Garage doors that face open fields take a beating, springs lose tension in the cold, and bottom seals wear out faster than you'd expect. A tune-up before winter keeps most of that in check.
Getting Around Richland County
Interstate 71
Interstate 71 crosses the county with interchanges at State Route 13, signed for Mansfield and Bellville, State Route 39, signed for Mansfield and Lucas, and U.S. Route 30, signed for Mansfield and Wooster.
U.S. Route 30
U.S. 30 runs as a freeway between Upper Sandusky and Mansfield, and the stretch through the Mansfield area is urban in character. As the old Lincoln Highway it was State Route 5 from Indiana to Mansfield and State Route 10 from Mansfield to Wooster. In Mansfield it meets U.S. 42, signed for Mansfield and Ashland.
Mansfield Lahm Airport
Mansfield Lahm Regional Airport, north of Mansfield near I-71, U.S. 30 and State Route 13, is named for Frank P. Lahm, a balloonist who trained his son in the field where the airport stands.
