From Township Number 7 to a City of 24,847

In the 1600s Wyandot, Ottawa and Erie people lived across the land that is now Avon, Avon Lake, Bay Village and Westlake. Township Number 7 in Range 16 of the Western Reserve got its first permanent American settlers in 1814, a party from Montgomery County, New York, led by Wilbur Cahoon, whose house is on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1818 the township was organized as Xeuma, then renamed Troy Township, and when Lorain County was created in 1824 it became Avon Township. The post office opened in 1825, the whole township became a village in 1917, and Avon became a city in 1961.

Most of Avon's growth is recent. It had 2,773 residents in 1950 and 7,337 in 1990, then jumped to 11,446 in 2000, 21,193 in 2010 and 24,847 in 2020. Out of 9,208 housing units, only 4.2% were vacant, and the homeowner vacancy rate was just 0.8%. Avon's branch of the Lorain Public Library added 16,000 square feet in an expansion that opened in January 2023. Interstate 90 and State Route 2 cross the city, with exits at State Route 83 and State Route 611.
