Pioneer settler Thomas Smith gave this Wayne County village its name, and Sugar Creek runs past it. Smithville counted 1,338 residents in 2020 and fills the western side of Green Township, whose population is 12,246. Back in 2010 the village had 541 households in 573 housing units; married couples made up 52.1% of them, and half the residents were older than 44.2.

Smithville stayed a small village for a long time, with 546 people in 1880 and 755 in 1950, before passing a thousand, 1,024 residents, in 1960 and peaking at 1,467 in 1980. Just to the south lies Weilersville, at the crossroads of Weilersville and Eby roads. It was once a busy hamlet with a general store, a blacksmith, a woodworking shop, two stockyards, a grain elevator, a railroad line and even a post office; little of it remains, and it is now mostly a residential neighborhood. Another settlement, Paradise, once centered on Rohrer Road at the township's center and is now counted a ghost town.
The village's growth years after 1950 left many newer houses alongside older ones, so we see both extension-spring doors on detached garages and torsion springs on attached ones.
Sugar Creek's bottomland pools the coldest air on still nights, and morning fog leaves moisture on every spring coil and hinge pin. By February, a door that was merely sluggish in the fall may be frozen to its threshold.

Smithville is home to the Wayne County Schools Career Center and to the campus of the Green Local School District, which also serves nearby Marshallville, including Smithville High School. They do, as long as the door is a sectional overhead type. Springs, cables, rollers and openers on outbuildings get the same care as a house door.
